Sans Chavelle.

Sans ChavelleSydney group Sans Chavelle was formed by ex-members of One Dollar Short, Room 101 and Six Star Target. Last year’s self-titled debut EP is a neat little package mixing some screaming, clean vocals and melodic rock guitar sounds. Interestingly, they decided to record at Adelaide’s own Soundhouse studios (home to greats such as Thinktank, Seraphs Coal and EdisonMusic) and will be recording their full-length album there in July.

"We had been together for eight months and we decided to record an EP," drummer Chrisopher K explains. "We knew a good sound engineer in Adelaide and we decided to head over there and make a product we were all going to be happy with. I think it’s better heading interstate to record because you’re away from everyone and it’s just you and the band. It was obviously better for [producer] Ian [Miller] as well because it was in his environment and a studio where he knew the equipment well."

Sans Chavelle seem quite pleased with the response their EP has been receiving. "Ultimately it was three songs we thought were the best at that point and one of them we wanted to get rid of because it was an old track you just want to record, put it out there and bury," he laughs. "It’s not a record like 50 Cent where we’re selling millions of copies but we’ve sold two pressings and that’s good enough for us as long as people hear it. People either like it or not. If we get some decent shows and some type of following that’s cool."

Set Fire To My Home records are lending some financial assistance for their album but Christopher assures me it’s better to not borrow a big amount. "It’s all pretty independent. Set Fire To My Home have helped us out with some money but we try and pay for it as much as we can. It’s not like they have stacks and stacks of money to throw around and we don’t really want to owe anyone.

"We’re heading over to Adelaide in July for three weeks to record an album with Ian and Anj [Marla] at Soundhouse. We’ll try and have ten or more tracks ready and pick what we can out of that. We don’t want to make it daunting with a really long album, it’s just nice to have something recorded."

Sans Chavelle play constantly in their hometown and Christopher notes the difficulty of breaking into the Sydney music scene. "Heaps of people are really jaded so it takes a lot for them to be impressed when a band first comes out or they’ll cut you down. I don’t think we really care about it that much, but outside of our opinions it’s pretty good and there’s a lot of people doing good stuff. We’ve done about fifty-five shows since November; it’s definitely tested us, made us be really good mates and hate each other as well. It’s better when we play together that much.

"There’s some rad venues in Sydney. For a while there was nothing; now there’s a place called the Marquee on Paramatta Road which has just recently opened up and the Annandale is always awesome to play at. You’ve got other good places like the Bat & Ball, and there’s other accommodating places as well."

Being an open bunch of people ensures everything is out in the open rather than being bottled up, a helpful attribute in songwriting.

"It’s not like we’re the best of buddies. Two of us live with each other and the other two live together. That makes a big difference and the fact we have our own rehearsal space. I think we work together really well. If we’re gonna fight, we’re gonna fight. Everything is out in the open and there’s nothing to hide, if you know what I mean. I think that makes it better for song writing as well."

Sans Chavelle play at the Enigma Bar on Sat 19 June with Horsell Common, In The Grey and Hi End Audio.
