Alex Lloyd.
"At
the moment I'm on the proper album tour," a happy sounding Alex
Lloyd begins. Said album is quite possibly this years sleeper
hit, 'Distant Light,' a record of rare beauty that may take
a few listens to fully appreciate. The present tour marks a
turn around for Lloyd, who felt the weight of the world on his
shoulders late last year.
"Things at the moment are going awesome," he explains. "My passion's back. I kind of lost it last year so it's nice to have that all back again. Changes have occurred in my personal life, which have been dramatic - I got married and had a child, and I probably should have just concentrated on those things and not gone out to try and promote a record. I was still just getting my head around becoming a father and husband, and trying to do rock'n'roll at the same time, and I think I needed to give that some breathing space. But that's with 20/20 hindsight. It's nice now, though; it was a good lesson to learn my limitations. It is one of the best things that ever happened to me, becoming a father and growing up in that way."
Those sorts of changes can have a big impact. Lloyd often writes about lost love and loneliness and I wondered if becoming a husband had changed any of those themes. "Well, I can tell you, going away from my wife and child for a week certainly instils feelings of loneliness and longing. But I've got to be honest, with a lot of my songs, which would be interpreted as relationship songs; they are, but not necessarily about sexual relationships. I have friends and people that I love dearly, those relationships are more than enough to inspire those feelings."
Not that Lloyd's too fussed about interpretation. "I never get frustrated when people get different things from the songs than what was intended. I'm actually always amazed at how people interpret the songs, and when they offer those sorts of interpretations to me. That's cool to me. I find it beautiful and interesting that they are so many things you can get out of my songs."
While talking about the release of 'Distant Light' Lloyd was honest enough to accept that not all his albums were the hits they could have been. "There are always going to be ups and downs over your career," he shrugs. "I'm having the best time of my life and I think I'm playing some of the best shows I've ever played. I haven't been overly disappointed with the new album. I think it is one of the best I've ever done. They may not be the best songs ever written, but as a group they are really good.
"The latest album too is only just starting to find its feet, really. It's not the kind of album that you get instantly, but sometimes these sort of albums are the ones that have more to them. It's a learning experience. If there wasn't a challenge in music, I wouldn't do it."
