The parties are bucketing down like the rain! Big names like
this usually hit us in summer, for the obvious weather-related
reasons, but this June will see some of the most anticipated
dance acts to hit our shores in a more than welcome anomaly
in the seasons of dance.
Chris Fortier, America's no 1 progressive
DJ plays Fabric on Thu 3 June. Joining him will be Mal Chia,
Lachy Pender and the Fabric crew.
We've been waiting many, many years to see this DJ,
and finally, if there's not another last minute pull out,
we will get to 'believe' as DJ Hype touches down for the first
time in Adelaide at Traffic on Fri 4 June, alongside MC Rage
for the True Playaz World Tour. This very special event will
be capacity, so get there early!
They must have loved us last time, because
they're back already! The Jungle Brothers return for an intimate
event to be held at Adelaide Uni Bar, also on Fri 4 June.
Lyrics Born also returns to Adelaide for a special show on
Thu 10 June at Traffic. If you missed him last year when he
toured with Lateef the Truth speaker, as Latyrix at Mojo,
then you missed one of the highlights of last year.
The Turbine crew bring Netherlands' Black
Sun Empire to Adelaide for the first time for all the junglists
at Traffic on Fri 11 June. Joining them will be Perth's Mystique,
who wowed crowds a few years ago with her foxy attitude and
sexy mixing.
In something that has me so flabbergasted I don't know where
to begin, Heaven nightclub present Sweatfest 2004 on Fri 11
June, featuring C&C Music Factory, Snap! and The KLF. Yes,
that's not a misprint: the biggest dance acts of the 90s.
For true fans of the KLF, note that masterminds Bill Drummond
and Jim Cauty are definitely NOT performing, but the line
up includes Barbara Tucker, Turbo B, and Wanda Dee from each
mega group respectively.
For the hard dance people, look no further
than Frantic with Phil Reynolds and James Lawson at St Pauls
on Sun 13 June.
By the time you read this, the inthemix.com.au Top 50 DJ poll
should be announced. Check the website (inthemix.com.au) to
see if your favourite Adelaide DJs made it, and get along
to the inthemix50 party at Traffic, with last year's winner
Kid Kenobi alongside Odyssey, John Doe, Mr S, Brendon, H-Bomb
and ATB on Sat 12 June
Speaking of awards, it appears that a certain
person (whom I shall call "Max Headroom") has been having
a go at the SA Dance Music Awards in another dance-related
publication. Whilst I agree that the current voting system
is flawed, I totally disagree that a "panel of esteemed peers"
should do the judging for all of the awards apart from "most
popular DJ." What's wrong with an entirely public vote? Is
Max saying that the Dance music public is too ill-informed
on who or how to choose the best DJs? I ask you, "Max," who
is better to judge than those who go out to events each and
every week to a wide and diverse range of DJs and performers?
Everyone knows that the Adelaide dance music scene is more
incestuous than the backwaters of Louisiana, with too many
egos in the scene, and trying to balance these egos into a
"panel of esteemed peers" would cause even more division in
(and derision from) the dance community than there is now.
Something like the SADMAs needs one person to step forward
to take control, and that person appears to be Tony Carracia,
who's done a splendid job in the past.
