Puff 'n' Stuff.

Hey, South Australian music industry! The brand spanking new Music Index of South Australia (cunningly abbreviated to "MISA") is out now, complete with an expanded Victorian section for bands and artists seeking to make the trip east (and for Victorian counterparts to head west): it's $25, it's available at Borders and in the dB Magazine office on Hindley St, and if you're doing anything at any level in the SA music industry you'll need one at your fingertips - from bands to booking agencies, from retail to record companies, from accountants to associations: it's all here!

Not only are the Von Bondies rocking the Enigma Bar on the very night that this issue of dB Magazine hits the streets - Wed 7 April - but they're also doing an in-store signing at Big Star Records on Rundle St at 4pm that afternoon, affixing their signatures to copies of their new single C'mon C'mon and their 'Pawn Shoppe Heart' CD. Might want to get there a smidge early, mind...

Some local ch-ch-changes: Fear Of Flying have bid farewell to bassist Jade Robinson and replaced her with former Hummel four-string master Phil Lewis (also recently, if briefly, of Kaleidoscope). While Phil sorts his parts out, bandmates Scott Doherty and Paul Banytis are flying the FOF flag at the Prince Albert on Thurs 8 April.

Everyone likes launching CDs, right? Well, it certainly appears so to Puff: after all, there's plenty of CD launches happening in the nearish future. First up, The Sunroom launch their debut at the Jade Monkey on Sat 17 April (with No Through Road, Iron Man and Skull), Lazaro's Dog launch the long-awaited 'Triple Platinum' at Fowlers Live on Fri 23 April (with High Stakes), Southpaw set their self-titled, Nick Barker-produced effort free at the Grace Emily on Thurs 29 April, Everest celebrate the release of 'Ashes' at the Austral on Fri 30 April, The Seeds Of Babylon launch 'Indian Cabaret' at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 1 May, and Kaleidoscope launch their second album 'Voluptua' at the Gov on Sat 29 May. Phew!

Full Frontal Lobotomy, meanwhile, seem to have solidified their streamlined, three-man lineup and are all set to rock at Prepare To Burn on Sun 18 April, along with (deep breath): I Killed The Prom Queen, Day Of Contempt, Shotpointblank, Parkway Drive, Stronger Than Hate, Carpathian, Masseria, Equal Minded, Wendy Icon, Through Closed Eyes, A Secret Death, Never Again, Her Nightmare and Officer Down. Phew!

H-Block 101 are coming to Adelaide for the first time in yonks, having left UMG who released their 'Burning With The Times' album a few years back. Now independent, they've released a new EP entitled... er, 'Burning With The Times,' which boasts the track Burning With The Times. In five parts. Hmmm. You can demand an explanation of your own by getting along to the Enigma Bar on Fri 23 April (with The Saucermen, The Kamikazes and The Jerks) or the Crown & Anchor on Sat 24 April (with Bombscare and Star 10 Hash).

It's been a bad week for the families of touring artists. First the Counting Crows cancelled their Australian tour on the day of their Adelaide show when news came of the death of frontman Adam Duritz's grandmother. Then Lucinda Williams cancelled her entire Australian tour in the wake of the death of her mother Lucille Morgan last month. Neither tour has been rescheduled as yet, and ticket refunds are available at the points of purchase.

Got your Jet ticket yet? No? Then you're out of luck, kiddo: their show at Thebarton Theatre on Thurs 20 May has completely and utterly sold out. No more tickets. None.

Stuff from Puff: Har Mar Superstar (who had to get his teeth fixed after an altercation with an audience member during his South By Southwest set) has recorded two songs for his new album with (ahem) Holly Valance... Elvis Costello has just signed a two book deal with publishers Simon & Schuster... speaking of the publishing arts, Krist Novoselic (yes, him out of Nirvana) has just written a book entitled 'Of Grunge & Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy!,' a political tome aimed at young people which should see the light of day in September... Bobby Brown has been released from prison after paying US$63,000 in back child support, but has been ordered to explain how he intends to make future payments since he's claimed to have no job or assets... Limahl (remember The Neverending Story, people of a certain age?) was voted off Germany's 'Come Back' show, in which former pop stars get the chance to re-launch their stagnant careers. He cried, allegedly... and finally, Prince - that artist who left Warners acrimoniously in the 90s after declaring that being signed to a record company was tantamount to slavery - has, er, just signed to Sony.

Baby Doll's video for Born To Lose (directed by Peter Gravestock of Bit By Bats, fact fans) has just been played on Rage, which seems as good an excuse as any to play a show at the Grace Emily on Sat 10 April, along with the Unspoken Things.

Alt.country fans, take note: Jay Farrar, the man who damn near invented the genre with his band Uncle Tupelo, is coming to town in support of last year's 'Terroir Blues.' Catch him at Jive on Wed 19 May.

They're electro. They're rock. They're Vanlustbader, and they're coming to Adelaide for the first time ever for a show at the Grace Emily on Fri 16 April. What's more, they take this issue's Seven Questions - Of Fame! challenge at dbmagazine.com.au. Which is pretty neat.

Or maybe you have a yen for some punk? Then you'll want to catch Melbourne noiseniks Bastard Squad, coming to Adelaide for the first time in over a decade for a couple of shows: Fri 16 April they're at the Glenelg Surf Club with Standard Union, then the Crown & Anchor on Sat 17 April with The Jerks.

Do The Butterfly Effect want to marry Adelaide or something? It seems like no sooner do they swing through for a few gigs than they're heading back our way - this time for two shows at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 24 April and Sun 25 April.

The Redsunband have just released their new single Sleep Forever (which Triple J are all over at the moment), and to celebrate they're playing at the Enigma Bar with Love Outside Andromeda (who used to be known simply as the somewhat shorter "Andromeda") and locals Hunting Season on Fri 16 April.

Got an ass that needs shaking? You do? Then you'll probably want to bring it to Heaven on Sun 11 April, since that's when Planet Funk take the stage, along with DJs Junior Jack and Kid Cr¸me.

The United Trade & Labour Council are celebrating May Day with a weekend of gigs at the Gov: check next issue for all of the details and events, but be advised that on Fri 30 April they've enlisted their comrades Skulker and Sumi, while Sat 1 May features the left-wing sounds of The Whitlams' frontman Tim Freedman, along with Liam Gerner and "Red" Andrew P Street.

He wants to scream at the top of his lungs, apparently: he's John Mayer, and he may well do just that when he's at the EntCent on Tues 20 April.

Or maybe you'd prefer something a little more... folky? Something like Richard Thompson, who's in the country for the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival but is popping down our way in order that he might do a show at the Gov on Sat 17 April.

Also in the country for Blues'n'Roots purposes is Jackson Browne, who is also coming to Adelaide for a show - catch him at the Festival Theatre on Mon 19 April.

Speaking of blues and roots, lovers of blues and cyberspace should take note: the SA Blues Society's web site has been revamped and is now called "SA Roots'n'Blues" and can be found at http://users.senet.com.au/~bluessa/index.htm.

Grrr! Get loud and get angry at Fowlers Live on Sun 11 April - after all, that's when Entombed and Daysend will be doing the proverbial Do.

You know, dear reader, sometimes Puff gets lonely. Days are spent wandering in the enclaves of Puff Estate, plucking a flower here, chasing a meerkat there; with evenings given over to gazing into a roaring fire, sipping fine claret, reflecting on how all earthly glory is fleeting, and generally having a good old mope. Hence, it's always nice to receive visitors, just to keep the spirits up: visitors such as Clare Bowditch & The Feeding Set and Machine Translations, who are popping by on Fri 23 April (and also doing a show at the Jade Monkey, as it happens), as is Jimmy Walker - best known as JJ, the chap who kept bellowing "Dy-no-mite!" in 'Good Times,' who's using his visit to Puff as an excuse to perform at the Gov on Fri 23 April. Puff might have to get some extra chairs, since that's the same day that Anthrax, Soilwork and Killswitch Engage are popping over for scones and tea (oh, and doing something at Heaven that night, apparently), and of course Steve Poltz will be swinging by that day en route to his show at Jive. Sat 24 April's just as hectic, with a swarm of houseguests including hardcore/emo sorts Pilot To Gunner (who are staying over while they do their Enigma Show), Rocket Science (on their way to Fowlers Live) and Donavon Frankenreiter and Rob Sawyer (who have booked a Gov gig, while they're in town anyway). What a weekend! The amount of laundry alone will keep Puff's dedicated staff occupied, what with Endorphin staying over while in town for the Sun 25 April show at the Gov, and the polite-but-messy gents from the Dillinger Escape Plan, who'll no doubt spill something during their stay (and play at the Enigma Bar on Sun 25 April).

Indie kids, start saving your pennies for May, since that's when new albums will be arriving from McLusky ('The Difference Between Me And You Is I'm Not On Fire' though Remote Control), Morrissey ('You Are The Quarry' on BMG) and PJ Harvey ('Uh Huh Her' on UMG). Dear readers, we live in a golden age.

The Hampdens are the latest hotly-tipped sorts from the west and they're heading our way for a show at the Jade Monkey on Wed 21 April.

So much rock! So much folk! So much electronica, and dance, and acoustica, and emo, and every other genre, each in generous proportions - all in all, a veritable feast for the sense - and one that you'll want to indulge in, provided that you...
