Parrot Fever (or, Lies I've Told in Chat Rooms)
Theater Simple
Little Theatre, FringeHUB Until Sun 14 March

The ensemble group Theatre Simple never seem to stop working! So far this Fringe they've served up 'The Big Time' and 'Notes From Underground'. Next on the menu is the third course and they have prepared; 'Parrot Fever (or, Lies I've Told in Chat Rooms)'. This delectable dessert is raunchy, sad and uplifting all at the same time, a diamond in the mines of the Fringe. As always, Theatre Simple bring along the right ingredients; strong energy, witty timing and a clean precise performance that holds you captivated till the end. 'Parrot Fever' is the story of a woman known as 'Keira' who contracts the illness Chlamydia psittacosis, also known as parrot fever, that attacks the lungs like pneumonia. Soon after this her best friend dies and 'Keira' has no one to turn to other than the anonymous realms of the internet chat rooms.

This very intelligent play is part autobiographical, part imaginary tale and part actual chat room dialogue, written by Award winning Seattle writer, Keri Healey. The absolute truth and realism of the narrative and the sincerity of the actors makes this production totally riveting. It is easy to empathise with 'Keira', played by Monique Kleinhans, as she enters her experiment in the realm of the cyberspace.

Anyone who's pretended to be someone they're not as they chat through a keyboard (which has to be the majority of us) knows just how exciting it can be, and it turns out it's just as enjoyable to watch someone else go through it. With recognisable lines from the net (some you've even said yourself) coming from the other actors, Keira embarks on a journey including men, relationships and cybersex (be warned as some scenes contain virtual nudity and sex scenes). Go see this intricate but simple theatre: it's certainly worth a look.
