Pandora 88
Fabrik Company
AIT Arts Main Theatre
Until Sat 13 March
Sitting high above the stage in the AIT Arts Main Theatre, you look down to a tiny rectangular box, probably only 1 metre squared by 2 metres high, and you think, how am I going to be entertained by people only using that tiny area? At the opening of 'Pandora 88' the performers are indeed outside of the box, however the most enjoyable relationship occurs once they're inside and from then on you're hooked.
'Pandora 88' takes two men and places them alone in a cell. They form a magical relationship, keeping each other entertained (and the audience) with childlike games such as hide and seek. As the relationship evolves, joy turns to frustration; frustration with being stuck in the claustrophobic space and with each other. This culminates in a climactic, aggressive fight between them.
Throughout the play are beautifully crafted dances that are quietly poetic, supported by an atmospheric trance-like soundtrack. The two performers have total control over their bodies and the space, and use techniques such as slow motion with perfect application. They created a world in which gravity no longer existed as they climbed the walls, roof and each other with an incredible flow of energy. Ultimately this show is a beautiful piece of physical theatre.
The lighting design for the show was incredible, utilising all possible angles. One striking involved a two dimensional vertical plane of light in which the performers mesmerised you as they placed only their head and hands into the light.
With only seven shows available, be quick to catch this stunning show.
