Puff 'n' Stuff.
Don't get Puff wrong, there's a certain efficiency at work in having the Fringe, the Festival, WOMADelaide, the Clipsal 5000 and Puff's Mum's birthday all at the same time, but after the last five frantic weeks there's certainly something to be said for parcelling these events out and spreading them over the entire year. In any case, after pumping out the print version of dB Magazine weekly and updating onlline daily, for the past few weeks, we're moving back to our far more civilised fortnightly schedule. You can almost smell the relief.
So, who's got a CD to launch? Well, Equal
Minded for one, and they're doing just that on Sat 13 March
at Jive, with Officer Down, The Castros, This Indecision and
Shattered Glass along for the ride. It's all-ages and kicks
off at 6pm.
The Saucermen are also in a launching sort of a mood and are setting their new disc free at the Jade Monkey on Fri 12 March, with Lucky 7 and Hicks Atomics.
Way Back When are also launching it up at
the Jade Monkey on Fri 19 March, along with Sure Changes.
Melbournian mad people Jihad Against America make another welcome trip to Adelaide, but this time they have their debut 7" EP in their hot little hands (which includes such live favourites as Terrorism Is The New Black and Jon Bon Chomsky). Be part of the problem and help launch it at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 13 March, along with guests Kamikaze.
The Hilltop Hoods, Kaleidoscope and Insect
Seeking Technology are doing it for the bears: specifically,
they're playing a benefit gig to raise money for the Animals
For Asia Foundation to try and fight the reprehensible treatment
of bears in captivity (particularly the ill-kept "dancing bears")
- enjoy some sweet music for a good cause at Traffic on Fri
12 March.
Goodbye J-Ded, hello Mirrorline; it seems that the J-Ded kids have decided that a change is as good as a holiday, and hence will be performing under their new moniker at the Jade Monkey on Sat 13 March, along with the gig-loving Bad Girls Of The Bible.
More local ch-ch-ch-changes: things have
been a bit quiet in the Career Girls' camp of late, and that's
probably not going to change anytime soon thanks to guitarist
Sasha Pazeski's rather inconvenient decision to move to Melbourne.
The quartet insist they're not splitting up (for one thing,
they're in the midst of work on their followup to 2002's 'Welcome
Back, Moon Girl' CD) but they won't be gigging too much for
the next little while. In any case, they're playing a show to
say adieu (but not goodbye) at Jive on Sat 3 April, with pals
Sal Paradise.
It's been ages since we've seen Rocket Science on South Australian soil (understandable, since they've been wowing UK and Europe with performances that lead Uncut to proclaim them "the best live band in the world"), but now they're back with a new single - Sex Call - and a national tour with City Lights that'll see them hit Adelaide on Sat 24 April.
Those who've missed the frenetic rockabilly
of the Fireballs will want to make sure they're at the Crown
& Anchor on Fri 12 March when the Sinshifters (featuring ex-'Balls
Joe Phantom and Eddie Fury) make their Adelaide debut, along
with Uber Stomp.
Those who know such things have been tipping the Von Bondies for big things (and not just because lead singer Jason Stollmeyer laid out Jack White in a brawl last year) - and you can see why by a) grabbing a copy of their soon-to-be-released 'Pawn Shoppe Heart,' and b) catching them at the Enigma Bar on Wed 7 April.
It seems that Russian "lesbian" "schoolgirl"
duo Tatu are - gasp! - not long for this world: UK music mag
Mojo quotes Lena Katina as saying "We are very tired of each
other and it's not fun playing lesbians any more," suggesting
that the forthcoming Not Going To Get Us might be the
last single. And Puff thought they had such a glorious, long-term
future ahead...
They're possibly the most bearded band on the planet (although ZZ Top might have the edge over them, if you go by averages), and they're bringing their mix of fragile lo-fi and rockin' skate-indie to Adelaide for the first time ever: they're Grandaddy, and they're at Fowlers Live on Tues 11 May.
Ex-Adelaidean electronic artiste Ben Frost
is returning to his old hometown for his first gig in almost
three years, celebrating the release of his critically-acclaimed
'Steel Wound' album (based entirely on guitar recordings, he
assures Puff): catch the new wall-of-sound Frost at the Jade
Monkey on Sun 14 March, along with The Sunroom and Simpleman.
Want to get (born) along to Jet's show at Thebbie on Thurs 20 May (supported by The Pictures and Bit By Bats)? Well, you'd better make sure you grab a ticket nice and early, then: the 'Thee Get Well Gone Revue' tour goes on sale on Thurs 18 March.
Congratulations are due to Tidal who've just
inked a deal with the resurrected Greasy Pop Records and have
already begun pre-production on their album with producer DW
Norton (ex-Superheist). Before they vanish into the studio they're
playing at the Enigma Bar on Fri 12 March with Snap To Zero
and Full Scale.
Eskimo Joe have a new record company (FMR), a new single (From
The Sea) and are about to hit the road on a tour that will
see them visit Adelaide for a show at Fowlers Live on Sun 4
April, with The Panics.
Congratulations are due to Ireland's The
Frames - who were in Adelaide late last year, incidentally -
who beat U2 to take out the award for Best Band at the recent
Meteor awards (Ireland's equivalent of the ARIAs). They've also
just signed a worldwide deal with Tom Waits' label Anti (excluding
Ireland and Australasia), with another album due at the end
of the year.
Are you ready for all-out rope-on-rope warfare? If so, then you're ready for Ladiez Of Da League, Sydney's 16-strong female skipping/rapping/dancing/singing performance ensemble, who'll be doubling a whole mess of Dutch at the Universal Playground on Fri 12 March and Sat 13 March for their 2004 Tour Of Booty.
Deepchild has attempted to slip his brand
of soulful, organic beats into Adelaide without letting anyone
know, but Puff's a wise up to that sort of game: he'll be at
Sugar on Fri 12 March (with local support from Miss Kate, Hemi
Love and J Citizen) and the Rhino Room on Sat 13 March (with
New White Sneakers).
Hardcore will meet metal and have a bit of a stoush at Fowlers Live on Sun 25 April, since that's when the Dillinger Escape Plan introduce themselves to Adelaide.
WA troubadour Carus has been roaming around
the country, supporting the likes of The Waifs, the John Butler
Trio and Xavier Rudd, but now he's returning to Adelaide to
launch his brand new album 'Long Nights Are Gone' (his fifth
in total, and third in - ye gods - 12 months!) with a show at
the Grace Emily on Wed 24 March.
Staying At Home are coming all the way down from Sydney for the first time with their new CD 'Reaction Heroes' in their collective fist, and touring buddies No Grace in two for two shows: Fri 12 March at the Austral (with EdisonMusic) and the Blink-182 afterparty at Enigma on Sat 13 March (with Wendy Icon).
The good people of SCALA (or, less acronymically,
the Songwriters, Composers And Lyricists Association) are kicking
off a series of monthly songwriting workshops from Tues 16 March
at their regular home of the Joiners Arms. "Join Us" boasts
regular guest speakers and question-and-answer sessions, as
well as feedback sessions for writers. It'll be happening on
the third Tuesday of each month.
Mr Pete Murray's show at the Governor Hindmarsh on Fri 19 March sold out well in advance, so he's very kindly added a late show on the same night for those who weren't swift enough - you'd be wise to grab your tickets early, Puff suggests...
Looking forward to seeing UK ska legends
The Beat play with Area 7 at the Gov on Thurs 8 April? Well,
Puff's going to burst your bubble: apparently the tour has been
postponed. Watch this space for further developments. Watch
it.
NT folks Neo (whose brand new 'Serotonin' is out now) have been lurking around Adelaide for most of the Fringe (with Close Call's singer/guitarist Crafty sitting in while his band has been on a break), but they have to head home soon. Hence, you'd better catch them while you can, either at the Weimar Room on Thurs 11 March and Sun 14 March, or at the Crown & Sceptre on Sat 13 March.
Howl! Ka-chung! That's the sound of Opeth
tearing Heaven a new one on Tues 23 March, ably supported by
Virgin Black.
Come on - there's still some Fringe and Festival left, and in any case there are plenty of opportunities for you to...
