30 Minute Variety Hour
Scared Weird Little Guys
Royalty Theatre Until Sat 6 March

The Scaredies' comedic skills extend beyond writing funny lyrics. Their use of harmonies and timing to humourous effect is impeccable. What is more surprising is their ability to improvise. Utilizing a variety hour format allowed for some audience interaction beyond a simple play through of songs. A backing band, including horn section and a voice over guy also provided for some amusing interactive segments.

It was surprising just how many of the songs I already knew, considering I hadn't seen them live before. That didn't matter though, because I was still laughing throughout.

Besides regular songs like Condom, New Zealand, Phonebook, and encore piece I've Been Everywhere, one of the more amusing bits of the show was the occasional random pick of songs, done Òin the style ofÓ. Tonight, we were treated to Born In The USA, polka style, and Back In Black sung to the tune of the 'Home & Away' theme (Waltzing Matilda, Eminem style will apparently be a single in the near future). The highlight of the show for me was the interplay between the band and Rusty's banjo in a version of Dueling Banjos with a difference.

The show did end up running longer than the advertised hour (or 30 minutes, take your pick). That's hardly a complaint though. I walked away with my jaw sore from a night of solid laughter. That's as good an indicator of quality entertainment as anything else, isn't it?
