Finding Lehmo
Numpty Joke Boy Productions
Rumours, Fringehub Until Sat 14 March

During the introduction, Lehmo warns that he swears a lot and tells of how some people have been shocked to hear that, because that's not what he's like when on air for a popular FM station's breakfast show. To be honest, I've never heard him on the radio and I'm more surprised when a comedian doesn't use bad language. No matter. I guess the point here is you either like him on the radio or you don't, and that's going to more than likely seal your decision to get along or not.

Personally I didn't find Lehmo very funny at all. And yes, sure there were times when I might've been the only one not laughing at things, but there was the occasional visa versa.

After taking a considerable time to warm his audience up this night, he opened the main part of his act by running through some of the more colourful characters, the "nutbags" he likes to call them, that adorn our city's streets. Though not directly mean to those he mentioned, I still found this to be a little unnecessary and then, possibly a tad irrelevant to those in the crowd who aren't familiar with such individuals. As was his lengthy sketch on 'seventies motorcycle daredevil, Evel Knievel. While I personally found some amusement here, it was obvious that the majority of the audience really had no connection with jokes about a failed Grand Canyon jump thirty years on after the event.

Using the topic of so-called "crazy people" as a theme for the majority of his routine, I felt that all too often he was grabbing at straws when it came to obtaining a response. While there appeared to be too little thought put into his actual content, he then proceeded to over compensate with a little too much effort with the delivery. I don't know, maybe he should stick to the safer, much more controlled confines of morning radio and leave the live stand up to others.

Golly! Did I really say that?
