Danny Bhoy

Nova Cinema 2 Until Sun 14 March

This is not one for the kids. With such an innocent face, Danny Bhoy was unexpectedly foul mouthed and crass and not exceedingly funny. I had expected that his show would be more creative than basing the majority of his jokes on swearing or sleeping with his sister. When he did venture outside of 'sure shot comedy gold' his observations and recounts of stories were impressive and provided a little more insight as to why this man was chosen to perform in front of the queen.

The majority of material was based on Bhoy's impressions of Australia - our culture, accent and 'hard but fair' policies. To his credit the Scottish lad was able to master accents from Australian to American to Irish and even a German backpacker was thrown in for good measure. Starting one joke and ending up with five running at the same time, it was hard to see where he was going at times but once he reached the punch line 20minutes later all the kerfuffle was usually worth it. Unfortunately the show didn't last for a full 60minutes having started late and with Bhoy asking with 8minutes to go, 'Eight minutes? Well, this should be interesting - any questions?'

There wasn't a great deal of interaction with the audience and improvisation seemed out of the question with Bhoy tripping over the speaker (the perfect improv ploy) but not making a single quick witted line about it. A comic not quite fit for the Queen, Bhoy would appeal largely to anti-wine beer drinkers (his impersonation of wine connoisseurs received well-deserved applause) and beer drinkers, 'period'. After a few chuckles and a few cringes Bhoy managed to leave me smirking and with the desire to poke poor people with a stick (he made it look like so much fun).
