Ariadne's Thread
Too Close To The Sun
North South Dining Rooms, FringeHUB Until Sun 29 Feb

'Ariadne's Thread: An Island Odyssey' is a modern take on classic Greek Theatre. It is the tale of Sally, and all the myths and legends that cross her path. Sally is part autobiographical part fantasy, created by Montreal poet, Talya Rubin, both the writer and actor in 'Ariadne's Thread'. Rubin wrote the piece after her self-imposed exile on a little Greek island living in a cave house.

Rubin allows you onto her journey of discovery where she found the most important thing; herself. She also introduces you to the colourful characters living on the island, including storyteller Spiros and his wife (all played by Rubin). As the Greek characters, Rubin is enchanting, her storytelling skills are faultless and very funny. Her Greek accent is spot on and she has physically perfected every little detail of this old Greek couple.

As 'Sally' the telling of her life story tends to have every detail enacted and this can be a bit too much to follow, but when Rubin tones it down, she's very beautiful on stage, very serene. Within the performance, Rubin doesn't need to rely so on props so heavily; she can get the story across, perhaps with even more power, through her own body imagery. Although there is curiosity every time she goes behind the sheets on the line where she hides all the props - 'what's she going to pull out next? - in my opinion this detracts from her beautiful story. The story is beautiful and so open, Rubin is very brave to allow us all into her journey and I would like to thank her for allowing me to come along. Due to great response, she has extended her season in The Fringe, so you get an extra chance to see Rubin in the excellent 'Ariadne's Thread: An Island Odyssey'.
