Puff 'n' Stuff.
Is it just Puff, or is there too damn much on at the moment? It's like buses: you wait for ages, then suddenly you get two enormous arts festivals, a world music festival and a car race all at the one time. And that's only for starters: look what else is going on in our surprisingly vibrant burg:
CD launch update! Way Back When are launching
theirs with an all-ages show at the Underground on Fri 5 March,
along with Wone and Hometime.
Want to be in a film clip? You're in luck! The Trafalgars are filming some rock footage for their clip for London Taxi at Jive on Fri 5 March (when they and ex-Adelaideans Little Star support The Anyones), so make sure you're there early. And wear something nice.
Last time Jet played their own show here
they nearly burst the Enigma Bar. Now, having sold approximately
80 squillion records in the interim, they're coming back for
a headlining show at the somewhat larger Thebarton Theatre on
Thurs 20 May, supported by The Pictures and Bit By Bats! Here
are the Jet boys, no doubt exhorting a DJ to roll over (if they
don't mind):
NT's Neo are here for the Fringe and are launching 'Serotonin' with three multi-media-heavy shows: they're at The Regal on Sun 7 March and the Weimar Room on both Wed 11 March and Sun 14 March.
Are they metal? Are they hardcore? You be
the judge by getting along to see hotly tipped youngsters (and
sometime Mike Patton collaborators) The Dillinger Escape Plan
when they come to Australia for the very first time ever: catch
them at Fowlers Live on Sun 25 April.
Mind you, that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of tours avoiding us: Junior Senior are d-d-d-d-doing a lap of the east coast in April, and Adelaide m-m-m-m-m-m-misses out, a situation repeated by the Fun Lovin' Criminals at around the same time, not to mention UK post-punk stalwarts Wire.
But hell, who needs 'em? We've got Grandaddy
making their first ever trip to Australia in support of last
year's wonderful 'Sumday' album, and Adelaide audiences will
enjoy their chirpy, poppy, lo-fi, full-video-visual presence
at Fowlers Live on Tues 11 May.
The Daggerz Sound System is back, baby, with some nasty music at the Crown & Anchor on Thurs 4 March courtesy of Melbourne's The Knives Of Neptune and mighty locals Bad Girls Of The Bible. What's more, the Knives play at the Austral the following night with The Set Up and Eyes Like Black Stars on Sat 6 March at the Austral.
Hey, city slickers! Get aboard the Wildeloo
Express on Sat 3 April and head out north-west to the friendly
little town of Cummins. The people are nice, the landscape pleasing
- oh, and they're also having a music festival with Spiderbait,
Frenzal Rhomb, Testeagles, J-Ded, The Vermen, On Tick To Payday,
Smack Granny, Snap To Zero, Shock Tactics and more, which might
be fun too. And it's all ages to boot!
Fans of Kristin Hersh - yes, her out of Throwing Muses - will be pleased to know that she has a new and rockin' outfit known as 50 Foot Wave (featuring fellow Muse Bernard Georges). They've decided to go down the Ben Folds route of releasing a lot of CD-EPs frequently rather than albums occasionally, and pledge to have the first one out in April. Watch this space...
There's a lot going on in the Garden of Unearthly
Delights: that Tasmanian woman of song Monique Brumby will light
up the Regal Tent on Sat 6 March, and former Adelaideans Tom
and Marty Williams (from The Jaynes and Big Things Flying, respectively)
are returning in the guise of Cousin Leonard for a show on the
afternoon of Sun 7 March.
Don't forget that the very day that this issue hits the streets (Wed 3 March) is the date that former Ride frontman Mark Gardener plays all the hits and memories at Jive with The Laybacks and Andrew P Street.
Stella One Eleven are heading Adelaide-ward
with copies of their spanking new single She (from their
recent self-titled album) for a show at Fowlers Live on Thurs
4 March.
So, you read last issue's interview with End Of Fashion and thought "heck, I'd sure like to see those kids kick it live, what with them being former member of The Sleepy Jackson and having a splendid CD-EP called 'Rough Diamonds' that's out now." You did? You're in luck! They're doing a special mid-afternoon show at the Grace Emily on Sun 7 March.
Not one, not two - but three! Yes, no less
than three bands who boast singing drummers will be joining
forces for an all-hitting-and-singing jamboree at the Austral:
catch the Ramonettes, Shrunken Headz and Unspoken Things doing
it three ways on Thurs 4 March.
TommyGun have a brand-spanking new bassist in the form
of Justin Hermes (also of Diplomat), and you'll be able to see
his lanky, barefoot form on the stage of the Jade Monkey on
Fri 5 March, along with Bad Girls Of The Bible and Tusk.
Remember, if you get along to the Southern
Apocalypse show at the Enigma Bar on Sat 6 March you can say
farewell to Deaths Boundaries, who are reuniting the original
lineup for this one last hurrah. And, of course, there's also
Psycroptic, Alarum, Pathogen, Chalice and Cloth Tape, who are
not breaking up... at least, not as far as Puff knows...
Evergreen Terrace are here with rock on their minds and scorpions
in their pants - and you can enjoy their rock (and pants) at
their Enigma Bar show on Sun 7 March with I Killed The Prom
Queen, frequent visitors Parkway Drive and locals Mere Theory.
What's more, ET guitarist Josh James takes the dbmagazine.com.au
Seven Questions - Of Fame! challenge this issue. See what he
has to be say about Steven Seagal films, bowls of fruity pebbles...
and making out with Prom Queen's Jona?
Come gaze into Puff's crystal ball, dear
readers, and peer through the mists to reveal the hot rock action
that awaits the brave souls who dare pierce the veil. Hark!
Could that mix of gentle melody, accomplished musicianship and
the wise idea to stick a bar inside the Entertainment Centre
possibly herald The Write Stuff, featuring George, The Whitlams
and Mark Seymour on Thurs 11 March? And that rumble of down-tuned
guitars, that can only be either Full Scale at the Enigma Bar
or No Grace playing the Austral with Edison Music and Staying
At Home, both on Fri 12 March. The pop punk! The pop punk! Might
that signify Blink-182 and Brand New at the EntCent on Sat 13
March, or could it be an extra-ironic way to celebrate Jihad
Against America's return to the Crown & Anchor that same night?
Nothing's certain once you step over to the other side - well,
except that Mon 15 March will be jazzed up by Kurt Elling &
the Laurence Hopgood Trio at the Gov before being goth-popped
a bit by Placebo and Elbow at Thebbie. Spooky!
What sort of support act do you get for an artist of the calibre of Meat Loaf? Men pretending to play invisible guitars, that's who: Mr Loaf will be preceded by the winners of the Air Guitar championships when he plays at the EntCent on Wed 10 March.
Mark Ferrie and Andrew Pendlebury have got
Australian rock CVs as long as your longest arm (the Slaughtermen,
Models, The Sports, Stephen Cummings Band, the Sacred Cowboys).
However, since they're not the sorts to rest on their laurels
they've joined forces with cellist/singer Adi Sappir to form
The Mercurials - and you can see them at the Grace Emily on
Thurs 4 March, along with the recently-returned-from-the-UK
Jamaica Bastiras.
In the UK a hitherto-unknown teenage rock band, Poppyfields, debuted at number 28 on the charts with their debut single 45rpm, the video for which showed four fresh-faced young men rocking away. Except that it turns out that said band was in fact The Wayriders, who were in turn miming to the new single by 80s rockers The Alarm! Lead singer Mark Peters told the Guardian newspaper that the stunt was to prove that image, and predjudice against older artists, directly affected sales. "We were sure the reaction wouldn't have been so positive if they knew it was the Alarm... We wanted to make sure that we are judged purely on the strength of the music, and not by our old hairstyles." The Alarm's new album 'In The Poppyfields' is set for release in April.
The Weimar Room will be filled with the sweet,
a cappella sounds of The Idea Of North when they raise their
voices in song on Thurs 4 March.
That rock'n'roll madman Mandy Kane is coming to Adelaide with rock on his mind and new single Stupid Friday in his hand - catch the Kane experience at Flinders Uni on Thurs 4 March and the Enigma Bar on Fri 5 March (with Special Patrol and Brunatex).
The ever-charming Sally Dastey (you know,
her out of Tiddas) is heading our way with her band The Sweet
Sceptics and copies of her new single The Race Is On (from the
forthcoming 'Half A Wish Half A Moon' CD, due in April) - and
you can catch all of the above at the Regal Tent on Tues 2 March.
Come on - after all that you can't possibly tell Puff that you're going to do anything other than...
Get Out Of The House!
