Trip Down The Gutter.

Trip Down The GutterPerth duo Tomas Ford and Shane Adamczak are fervently charged that their irresponsible and stress fuelled, theatre sport flashback to year twelve exam time, 'Trip Down The Gutter', has been so well received here.

"This is the first time that we've been at a major Fringe Festival," enthuses Ford, "so we've had a lot of fun. Our audiences so far have been really responsive and no one on the streets has bitched at our full on promo-attacks, yet." "Yeah, I suffered through that four years ago," bemoans Ford about his own matriculation experiences, "not that I did much work. But it still, you know? Sucked."

"I actually did my TEE's (WA's equivalent to our SAT's)," avers Adamczak," and I worked hard for it, but I ended up doing an Arts degree so I didn't need it. But hey kids, stay in school and don't do drugs. Save that for when you go to Uni," he meaningfully advises.

Judging by their production, one can only assume that secondary school has scarred them for life. "I've mentally repressed everything bad that happened to me in high school," asserts Adamczak, "Needless to say I don't remember much of it at all. Except for the Afterball Party, that was great!"

"Your Afterball Party maybe," cautiously interjects Ford. "I went back to my girlfriend's house and got drunk with her parents. If that doesn't sound cool enough, that was the first time I'd ever got drunk too."

'Trip Down The Gutter''s protagonist, Stuart, may appear to cop the full brunt of anxieties and expectations that many would relate to around their final exams, but fortunately he's actually a composite character.

"Most of the stuff is based around a lot of the things that happened to our friends," Ford explains. "Most of our friends didn't get into Uni, so there was pretty rich source material from those guys and we just spiced it up a bit with other stories. But say with Joanne [Stuart's girlfriend] I wouldn't specifically want the person who that's based on to find out that she's the one we're talking about," he says with a nervous laugh.

"It started as a monologue where there were even more characters in it than there is now," they tell of the play's history, "which made it a little difficult to follow. I think a lot of the jokes that we've come up with together are much better than what I was doing solo. Before it was essentially just stand up comedy and there was a lot more audience interaction than what there is in this production."

'Trip Down The Gutter' is an absolute scream that will have you cringing tightly with laughter and leave you physically exhausted. Highly recommended.
