The Swindler
Patrick McCullagh
Fringehub, 6 Mar 4pm & 7 Mar 5.50pm or at The Weimar Room 5 Mar 8pm & 6 Mar 9pm
If you've been hanging around the Fringehub or down near the Garden of Unearthly Delights, then you've probably seen a lot of buskers. Well, one thing I don't like about buskers is that they call you over and make you wait ten minutes before they have called over enough people to make a crowd, then make you clap for making you wait. If this irritates you as well, then I suggest you go see 'The Swindler'.
'The Swindler', aka Patrick McCullagh, is what you get when you cross a card shark busker and a stage with all the trimmings. With his expert sleight of hand skills McCullagh has extended beyond a mere tricks show with the assistance of a projector, a computer and a camera (and a little insider knowledge). With a camera aimed at his table of tricks and the image projected up onto the wall behind The Swindler giving a perfect view close to the action, you feel sure that you can catch him out.
But of course how could he be The Swindler if he was to be seen swindling? If card tricks aren't your thing then wait until you meet Little Paddy, who's supposedly so much more trustworthy and would never lie to you more than twice. Although he'll fool you into playing the shell game for money (luckily it's somebody else's) because that's the only way it works.
McCullagh's show is clean family fun, well, except for the fact that he teaches you how to cheat at poker, but luckily he tells us to 'only try this at home'. For all the fun, it can be a little slow at times as McCullagh uses banter to move between tricks but this is quickly forgotten when he starts on the next deception. When you enter the room be ready to be swindled, hand over your cash (don't worry he'll give it back, probably) and be entertained.
