Suburban Motel

Bakehouse Theatre
Until 13 March
The Bakehouse Theatre has pulled another sweet bun out of the oven with American George F. Walker's 'Suburban Motel.' The dessert menu comprises two offerings - 'Problem Child' and 'Criminal Genius' - and you can have them both on the same night without any digestion. They are set in a sleazy room in a motel managed by a permanently inebriated but philosophically interesting non-genius. None of the characters are brighter than his Hawaiian shirt.
These ironically titled plays are two really very good yarns with more curvy situations than a croissant. In the first, a young couple needs to convince a social worker that they are fit parents for their fostered-out child to return to. Dark feelings of desperation by the mother lead to wrong choices. In the second, a father and son team of petty criminals gets involved with some pretty nervy women. Their half-baked plans and ideas take you to unexpected places with hilarious consequences - for us - but you have to pity the poor saps in the hotel room. Full of self-analysis, they just can't seem to get it, blinded as they are by resignation and justification.
Head baker Peter Green has chosen the right ingredients of hardened professionals and short timers, and had them leaping through the script in non-stop action. The actors made perfect sense of their characters' logic and performed them with vigour and realism. These are the funniest plays I have seen in a long time - funny because of the outcomes but also because the characters take themselves so seriously.
Check into the Bakehouse. They knead the dough and you'll laugh 'til you choke.
