Spencer P Jones
The Regal Tent
Sat 21 Feb
Drawing a very disappointing sized crowd, Spencer P Jones and his latest band, The Last Escape, stepped out and tore into Wherever & Whatever before venting off further steam with Clementine. And that set the tone for what Jones does best; perform gutsy, raw and pure honest rock and roll. With an exceptional new album, 'Fait Accompli', in tow it was from this that they chose to lift the larger percentage of this set, which in some ways just might've not gelled too well for those not yet familiar with the work.
Despite that, I guess not too many people would've been unhappy about the quality of the show, even if the clarity of Jones' vocals did waver in and out from the murky mix throughout. His guitar work however was undeniable, and the same can be said for his band. Andy Moore on drums was maniacal yet rock solid, an awkward impression given due to the low down to the ground way he sets up his very basic kit.
Both Jones and Phil Gionfiddo took turns to take the lead guitar duties, with plenty of blistering interplay between them, leaving bassist Helen Cattanach to anchor their sound and hold everybody together. When I Write My Book allowed a few rare quieter moments within the set, while the likes of Up For It, the electrifying Muse and the growling I Wanna Hand To Hold When I Go To Hell upped the ante in terms of attitude, leaving the Dylanesque I Wasn't Born Yesterday and the early Brit-pop tinged Destiny Minus You to further demonstrate the variety of influences.
Finishing off the main set with Are You A Gold Digger Mama, it appeared to take a lot of convincing to get them back from the now very rowdy small gathering, and after one more song they disappeared and the house lights were soon up.
