A Man, A Magic, A Music
Movin' Melvin Brown
Union Hall, until Sun 14 March

He brings to the stage a voice and a pair of silver tap shoes - so simple yet certainly something special. Movin' Melvin Brown is as charming as he is fit, with a laugh that no one can resist, or quite figure out. Telling of his life as a boy growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, Brown takes the audience on a journey through his own life and the music that has been an integral part of it. Like a solid gold juke box mix, classics such as My Girl, Johnny Be Good and Jackie Wilson's You're Taking Me Higher were belted out with pure heart and some mighty fine footwork; even Michael Jackson's moon walk got a look in. By the second song people were already clapping and singing along, but it was definitely the 30yo+ audience that were getting the most kicks.

From rhythm 'n' blues to rock 'n' roll my foot kept on tapping but 90minutes was definitely at the long end of the time scale - but how else do you fit in a man's life and five decades of black music? Although every song was sung with gusto and/or soul and he predominantly seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself, at times during Brown's narration there was a hint of the number of times he'd actually said the same lines.

Brown's life itself is fascinating: from early childhood falling asleep at church to sneaking out to sing at night clubs to being a solder and stripper (if only all men his age looked that good - 'Tap Dance Your Way To Health I & II' are just some of his videos available by the away). The man is full of warmth and charisma and has set out to change the world through his music in more ways than one. You're guaranteed to come away with a bigger smile and a whole lot of soul.
