Lamia's Dream
Night Dancer Productions
Caos Cafˇ Season closed

Sitting in Caos Cafˇ at 9.40pm, wondering is it going to start soon, some people from the back start to chat a little louder than us down the front. As they walk to the stage you realise this is the beginning of 'Lamia's Dream'. The actors tell you to continue your chatting and ignore what's happening as someone they've invited is unaware that they're part of the show. After the arrival of the oblivious Amber, performed by Marisa Cuzzolaro, and a pretty long set up, we finally get into the dream and meet Lamia, performed by Annette Schoenberger, and that's when it all becomes interesting.

With 'Lamia's Dream', Night Dancer Productions has tried to amalgamate a variety of methods of performance into one show. Schoenberger as the Greek mythical creature, Lamia, said to be a witch that eats children, performed in Suzuki method being the most unique of all the styles. In doing this amalgamation, however, it seems more like five separate characters with their own different techniques and styles, and rather than being an ensemble piece it can be quite disjointed. On the other hand, once you get used to the varying movement techniques, they seem somehow to fit the very mystical production.

In all, 'Lamia' is enjoyable for the movement and flow of the performance. The poetic script and performance happens all around you, placing you in a spiritual atmosphere of dreams. At times there is too much happening at once, although sometimes this was used to create a sense of the chaos to which the script repeatedly referred.
