Circus Monoxide
The Garden Of Unearthly Delights
Until 14 March
On the northern fringe of The Garden of Unearthly Delights, and within a fence covered with the diagonal yellow and black stripes that signify a hazard, a similarly painted double decker bus dominated the circus equipment before us. After cramming the late-comers into the corral, Circus Monoxide of New South Wales began clowning around with a bit of life-on-the-road monkey business under the duress of a laborious countdown to the real start of the show by the athletic MC.
Besides providing plenty of opportunity for chaotic shenanigans, when the count was complete, the bus amazingly unfolded like the back of a cargo plane with a lively two piece band and an acrobat attached to the back of the doors!
A stronger emphasis on the travelling theme might have held the show together as it came across as some rather strained and unrelated circus stunts. The highlight was the clown-in-the-crate sequence with his skill in make-believe. I was astonished when he jumped out of the crate onto its edge. He also leapt over his cohort while on a tightrope! In the opening aerobatic, one of the Monoxide quintets gracefully maneuvered the length of suspended ten metre high curtains. The finale was a trapeze act of Mini Minor proportions.
Running low on petrol, the MC announced the show was over - many people, unsurprisingly, exited stage left. But wait, there's more! She meant that after a show, they board the bus and hit the road, so there was a weak routine signifying transit. Not too soon, the MC again announced the show was over and this time it was the checkered flag.
Take the hazard signage seriously - don't exhaust yourself trying to see Circus Monoxide. While on the road from NSW, they might have driven a stronger theme and tightened their bolts - the rubber doesn't quite hit the road in this show.
