The Big Time
Theatre Simple
Little Theatre, FringeHUB Until 6 March

Theatre Simple's 'The Big Time' is simply fun. The performance is full of exuberant, youthful energy from the moment Sock, Vac and Lamp enter the space playing their latest crazy game. From that moment, the performance was completely engaging and though the story was incredible, it was never impossible.

Mark Fullerton as Lamp, Andrew Litzky as Vacuum Cleaner and Monique Kleinhans as Sock are obviously having a lot of fun and therefore so does the audience. It took a while for my brain to adjust to these characters as young inanimate objects but once I was there, I no longer saw three adult actors in front of me. The quick introduction was clever, Theatre Simple didn't waste time with step by step over-acted "I am a lamp and she is a sock, and this is how the story goes..." like one sees on kids' television. The audience was treated to an immediate start and only minutes into the production out came the guitars and into the first number. The songs, written by Chris Ballew, formerly of American band, Presidents Of The United States, were a great mix of witty ditties to heartfelt sock friendship, and of course a top of the pops hit with Tabletop Saturday Night. Sometimes during singing, 'The Things' would get carried away with the music and lose the younger audience's attention through lack of contact.

The highlight to the production was Llysa Holland as 'Every Thing Else'. Playing a variety of 'things', Llysa portrayed exceptional control and flexibility over her vocal chords and physicality. My personal favourite was the highly overexcited 'The Things' groupie, Shampoo. Take your kids of all ages (and if you haven't got any, borrow your next door neighbours') to see 'The Big Time' and have a boogey to 'The Things'.
