Puff 'n' Stuff.

We here at dB Magazine were pretty damn chuffed with the season of dB Magazine’s Big Indoor Cinema last year and so we and the Mercury have decided we’re going to do it all again! Hence we’re putting out the call for local film clips to screen before the films, so if you’re a local music type who fancies seeing their clip up on the big screen, email the details to sid@dbmagazine.com.au and she’ll advise about formats etc. The season launches in April, so get onto it now!

So: Fringe, eh? With something like 100,000 people welcoming the Fringe in on Fri 20 Feb, there’s officially something like 2 billion things happening every day for the next three weeks. And that’s just one of the reasons why a) dB Magazine is coming out every week until mid-March, and b) dbmagazine.com.au is getting updated daily with Fringe reviews, interviews and giveaways! Log in, check up, and get out (of the house)!

And even as we begin the adventure that is the Fringe, you might want to cast a thought down the track to one of the final events: specifically ‘Acquiescence: Not Dreaming, Creating’ which is happening at Higher Ground all day long on Sun 14 March with DJs, visual artists, installations, dancers, comedians, performance artists and a solid lineup of bands including Special Patrol, ASD, Angelik, Virgin Black, Muscle Car, Baby Doll, Stumbletrip, Sledgehammock, Flipside, Masakari and Ungkas - and that’s just for starters!

And where is this Higher Ground, you ask? Well, it’s the new venue that’s replaced the old UQ2 Pool Hall on Pultney St (just near the Pirie St intersection) and it boasts that it contains no less than 10% of the Fringe visual arts program and a huge range of performances from the likes of the Tal-Kin-Jeri Dance Group, Musik Kaba, The Border Project, Keith Preston’s Punch & Judy, The Monski Mouse Show, live bands, cabaret, jazz and classical music and more!

Returning to the subject of local bands and their activities, note that The Pales (or, as Puff calls them, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Kurb) launch their ‘Walk Away’ CD at Enigma on Sat 28 Feb with The Phobias.

Puff doesn’t want local CD launches to be lost in the wealth of Fringery, so take note: Way Back When launch their CD all-ages styleee at the Underground on Fri 5 March and over-18s only styleee at the Jade Monkey on Fri 19 March; Foreshore launch their disc at Jive on Sat 6 March, Blue Cube launch ‘Release The Dancing Bear’ at the Semaphore Workers Club on Fri 16 April, and the Seeds Of Babylon launch ‘Indian Cabaret’ at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 1 May.

Puff is delighted to hear that Brunatex are back after a year in the studio working on their as-yet-untitled followup to 2002’s ‘Stars & Splinters,’ and you can catch them at the Adelaide O-Ball After Party at Jive on Fri 27 Feb before they open for mad-as-a-stick rock beast Mandy Kane at the Enigma Bar on Fri 5 March, along with Special Patrol.

People who like leaving things to the very last minute, take note: the very day that this issue hits the streets - Wed 25 Feb - is when A Perfect Circle take to the stage of the EntCent, and also when Ms Ani di Franco does the same at Thebbie.

Lovers of horses that run quickly around a track will doubtless be at the Morphettville Racecourse on Wed 25 Feb, as the entertainment includes sets from corporate gig veterans Rush Hour and Lucifer’s Lounge... and, er, You Am I?

Ska fans, you’d better press your best skanking trousers since Two-Tone legends The (British) Beat have reformed (well, mostly - in any case, frontman Ranking Roger is back at the helm) and will be hitting the Gov on Thurs 8 April with Area 7.

Much of Adelaide Uni has been taken over with the Fringe so this year’s O-Ball will be a-happening on the Armoury Lawns (just behind the Art Gallery of SA) with a darned good lineup of Augie March, Little Birdy, Pornland, Epicure, Ground Components, Wolf & Cub and Cookie Baker. It’s an all-ages show and kicks off at the freshman-friendly hour of 6pm. Go the Birdy!

Barb Waters’ ‘Rosa Duet’ was one of the surprise gems of last year (featuring duets and collaborations with the likes of Kim Salmon, Lisa Miller, Rob Snarski, Matt Walker, Nick Barker and many more), and she’s bringing her band The Mothers Of Pearl to Adelaide to showcase those songs and more at the Grace Emily Hotel on Sat 28 Feb and the Regal Tent on Sun 29 Feb.

Feel like a good chuckle? Then you’d better get along to the final SA heats of 2004’s Triple J Raw Comedy! See Adelaide’s funniest folks battle it out in the semi-finals at PJ O’Brien’s on Tues 2 March, and then the grand final on Tues 9 March!

Bit By Bats are popping back to to Adelaide for a couple of performances: first up, they’ll be at Adelaide Uni at the ungodly hour of 6.45AM to perform Dance The Dance for the Triple J outdoor broadcast at O’Week on Fri 27 Feb. Then the following night (Sat 28 Feb) they pop over to the Jade Monkey for a show with Ground Components and Wolf & Cub. It’ll be the Bat’s last local show for a while, what with the east coast tour with Wire and all, so catch them while you can.

Puff had a hearty chuckle at the news that Welsh trio McLusky (who rocked like mad things at the Enigma last year) have apparently decided on a name for album number three, which they’ve just finished recording with producer Steve Albini: apparently the follow up to ‘My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad And Painful Than Yours’ and ‘McLusky Do Dallas’ will allegedly be entitled ‘The Difference Between Me And You Is That I’m Not On Fire.’ Expect to see it on CD shelves later this year.

The kids from George have just released their new album ‘Unity’ are coming to Adelaide for ‘The Write Stuff’ show at the EntCent on Thurs 11 March (with The Whitlams and Mark Seymour) but they’re also doing their own, ultra-exclusive show and meet’n’greet at Jive that very same day... but there’s a catch: the only way you can get tickets is by purchasing a copy of ‘Unity’ from any Big Star outlet. And you’d better do it quickly too, since there are only limited amounts of tickets on offer.

Folksters, take note: the 5th Frances Folk Gathering is happening over the weekend of Fri Feb 27 to Sun 29 Feb in (as the name suggests) Frances, near the SA/VIC border, not too far from Naracoorte and Bordertown. As in previous years, this is a free community event, so if it sounds like your sort of thing, fill up the tank, grab your gear and head northeast.

Ex-Adelaide girl Jamaica Bastiras has been off in her new home in London working on her music, but she’s coming back to show us what she’s been up to with gigs at the Jade Monkey on Fri 27 Feb (with Hedy’s Lament and Aviator Lane), the Grace Emily on Thurs 4 March (supporting Mark Ferrie & Andrew Pendlebury) and the Prince Albert on Thurs 11 March (with Jude Elliot). What’s more, she’s even taken the dbmagazine.com.au Seven Questions - Of Fame! challenge this issue.

It’s been a little while since we heard from Antiskeptic, but they’ve dropped Puff a note to inform everyone about their new single (Beautiful In White) and their new bassist, replacing Sean Daly who left the band nine months ago: after gigging with a few potential stringsmen, the band decided on... Sean Daly. The band are apparently re-energised and renewed, and are currently gigging up the east coast.

Lovers of the work of Joni Mitchell should make sure they catch ‘The Fiddle & The Drum,’ a performance of her works by Melissa McCaig and Kathie Renner with Vincent’s Chair at the Garage on Tues 2 March and Wed 3 March.

Since Hedy’s Lament have a brand new single out (entitled Ladyboy) they’ve decided to pop over for a couple of shows - they’re at the Jade Monkey on Fri 27 Feb (with the aforementioned Jamaica Bastiras and Aviator Lane) and the Austral on Sat 28 Feb (with Angelik). And they even take the dbmagazine.com.au Seven Questions - Of Fame! challenge this issue.

Want to see My Morning Jacket and the Ground Components kick it quirky and old-school in March? Well, you’ll have to go to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane - there’s no Adelaide show. Curses.

Alternatively, want to see Pete Murray at the Governor Hindmarsh on Fri 19 March? Then you’d best get your ticket as soon as possible, since they’re apparently selling like the very hottest of all possible cakes.

Oh come on. You can’t tell me that there’s a single reason why you should do anything this week except...
