You may have noticed a lot of mass media interest in our clubbing scene lately. The Sunday Mail even went so far as hiring underage "actors" and taking them to clubs to show "concerned parents" how easy it is for their teenagers to access alcohol - and of course all the pathetic pollies jump on the bandwagon, calling for inquires and so forth. I’ve already talked about the UK amendments to the hideous Criminal Justice Bill in a previous issue of DART, and in Thailand new laws will force clubs to shut at midnight! These may be the fears of someone who’s been going out since he was 15, but things may get ugly for us all in the not too distant future...
Anyway, it’s more of an excuse to get out
there and have a good time NOW! First up, GTB plays an original
Chemistry set at Heaven on Thurs 26 Feb. Joining him in celebrating
the old school will be Mr.S in a versus set with Odyssey. Jog
those tired memories and dance yourself stupid once again!
It’s the last Friday of the month again, and both Mojo and Traffic have their regular end of month gigs on. If you haven’t been to these gigs, then you have been missing out on two of the best gigs in Adelaide. Hooligan Jam features a host of Adelaide’s finest purveyors of beats with Pab, Grif, Funky J, Jonny Cochran and Dij playing a blend of hip-hop, house, breaks and garage. Traffic features the very popular DJs delight, this week featuring the prolific Skyver & D Jon.
As part of the 2004 Adelaide Festival, Universal
Playground is outdoors and under the stars every night from
Fri 27 Feb to Wed 12 March at Torrens Parade Ground. Universal
Playground’s opening weekend will include Melbourne reggae/funk
band Bomba; the diversely talented DJ James De La Cruz; award-winning
Sydney acts Wicked Beat Sound System, and Stephen Allkins; and
Indigenous rock group, Yugul Band.
Other highlights of the first week include a hip-hop night with Sydney’s Morganics and SistaNative all the way from Tonga, and local hip-hop heroes The Hilltop Hoods. Other exciting acts are South Africa’s Sotho Sounds and the bizarre Barcelona bred Osadia. Details on next week will appear, surprisingly enough, next week!
Go back to the future as The ElektroDisko
explores the resurgence of 80s influenced sounds with The Headband
to perform live electro alongside DJs Jono and JMJulian pumping
out classic electro funk from yesteryear to today’s modern interpretation.
This night of bleepy bloopy sounds is on Sat 28 March at the
Crown & Sceptre.
Finally we get to see why Two Tribes gets hundreds of SA residents flocking to Melbourne every year, and why it was awarded the Best National Show at the DMAs in 2003. Some of the biggest names in the dance music world are playing at this party, most of whom make their first visit to South Australia. Sat 28 Feb sees 77 Pirie Street (The Planet) transformed into four massive arenas of pure pleasure. Headlining the Gods Kitchen is Tomcraft playing a two hour set, BT’s Laptop Symphony and Mauro Piccotto slamming out a three hour set, along with the creator of TwoTribes, Mark James. The second arena, Future2004 is set to rock your world with Koma & Bones, Hybrid, Future Shock & Lucien Foort all playing massive beats and pieces. The House Party area features DJ Falcon as well as Sgt Slick, and the last area is the techno arena of Planet Hardware, with Green Velvet, Fergie & Christopher Lawrence. Local support is provided by Dr Damage, Brendon, Mal Chia, JoSH, Souli, Jayse, D-Lux, Steevie V, GTB & Mobin Master.
For those who are more into the hard styles
of dance, Dillinga, Lemon D, London Electricity & Pearlonyx
are set to rock the Stardust Summer Street Party, also on Sat
28 Feb at Traffic and surrounds. The Push room features Scott
Alert & Paul Holden, and JJJ’s Sharif will be along too!
The 8th Annual South Australian Dance Music Awards will be held on Mon 19 April at The John DiFede Reception Centre. This is always a night of great fun and frivolity as the Dance music scene comes together to give itself a well deserved slap on the back. dB Magazine is sponsoring the Most Popular Hip Hop DJ, so good luck to the nominees! If you’re interested in attending, tickets are available now at $65 a head - but get in quick as the tables fill up fast!
