Puff 'n' Stuff.

Can you feel that Fringey excitement, dear reader? The very air seems a-crackle with Fringesome electricity, Fringing it up on the old Fringe box. dB Magazine loves the Fringe so much that not only are we weekly over the entire festival span, we’re even doing daily Fringe updates at dbmagazine.com.au with reviews, interviews and giveaways every single day! That’s the dB Magazine difference, beloved readers. That’s how much we love the Fringe - and you!

Local CD launch round up time: Adelaide Uni campus Battle of the Bands finalists Aufschlag launch their ‘Symmetry’ CD at Jive on Wed 18 Feb, along with Myopia and Glu.

The Fortunate Sons are also launching like launchy things: their new CD, punfully entitled ‘Sonrise,’ gets set free on Sat 21 Feb at the Tea Tree Gully Hotel with guests The Liar’s Bench.

There’s a bunch of other CD launches coming up, including The Pales (Enigma Bar, Sat 28 Feb with The Phobias), Foreshore (Jive on Sat 6 March with Radiophobia and Special Patrol), Way Back When (who launch ‘All These Times’ with two shows: all-ages at The Underground on Fri 5 March with Wone and Hometime, and the Jade Monkey with Sure Changes on Fri 19 March), The Saucermen (Jade Monkey on Fri 12 March with Lucky 7 and Hicks Atomics) and Blue Cube (formerly the Sweet Baby James Trio, Semaphore Workers Club on Fri 16 April). Hola, Foreshore.

And don’t forget that Barcode say farewell forever with a show at Jive on Sat 21 Feb, along with Ungkas, Project X and Red Monika.

That swampy master of the blues Mr Tony Joe White returns to the Gov on Sat 21 Feb for some guitar wrangling on Tues 24 Feb, alongside Mia Dyson.

The next Stage Against the Machine all-ages jam night is a-happening at the Crossroads in Reynella on Fri 20 Feb: backline is supplied, so just lob in and register on the night!

Former Adelaideans Snap! Krack! (fomerly Snap! Crack! Le Pop!) are coming back home to do some recording and get their mums to do their washing, but while they’re about they’ll be playing on Thurs 19 Feb at the Crown & Anchor (with My Disco) and Fri 20 Feb at Allure (with Rambo, My Disco and Eyes Like Black Stars).

It’s always good to welcome a new local business, so it’s a hearty welcome aboard to Pulp Fiction Comics, who have just opened up downstairs at 34A King Willam St (just around the corner from Rundle Mall). And, naturally, you can pick dB Magazine up from there too.

Nerds, rejoice: 20th Century Fox has just announced the long-rumoured release of the original (or, as Puff might put it, the “good”) Star Wars Trilogy on DVD in September: all three films (‘A New Hope’ – the one that everyone calls ‘Star Wars,’ ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return Of The Jedi,’ or Episodes IV, V and VI in the post-prequel nomenclature) remastered and prettied up in a box set with a fourth disc containing an all-new feature-length documentary, plus never-before-seen footage. Puff’s mouth is already watering. ‘Star Wars: Episode III,’ meanwhile, is due to hit cinemas in May 2005.

We here at dB Magazine are feeling pretty proud of long-time contributing writer and football nut Chris Niehus who’s just published his first book: ‘Diehard: A Year On The Road With The Power.’ It’s the story of one man’s obsession with a football team, following the ups and downs of Port Power over the 2003 season. And you can lay your hands on a pre-release copy by emailing Chris on orders_2004@hotmail.com.

It’s easy for Puff to get complacent. After all, a trip to the local post office invariably ends in a car boot full of bulging mail sacks filled with letters from Puff’s many admirers in the music field suggesting collaborations, asking for grooming advice, or suggesting romantic trysts in some out-of-the-way locale. And Puff’s not made of stone (always shave with the grain, gents, not against), but it does sometimes get a bit much. Look at today’s haul, for example: A Perfect Circle are wondering what to wear for their Wed 25 Feb show at the EntCent, which is the same night that Ani di Franco wants Puff to dance on stage “to bring in the vibes” at Thebarton Theatre. Then Chris Smither wants some advice on his set at the Gov on Tues 2 March, Ride’s Mark Gardener is making salacious suggestion about what to do before his Wed 3 March show at Jive with The Laybacks and Andrew P Street, The Anyones need some new dance moves for their Fri 5 March show at Jive and Bluebottle Kiss and Big Heavy Stuff need Puff to adjudicate their “After you / No, after you” dispute on who’ll headline at their Sat 6 March show at Fowlers Live. It’s not easy, you know.

And while you’ve got your rock’n’roll diaries out, note that there are dates announced for Bruce Cockburn (Gov, Tues 9 March), Meat Loaf (EntCent, Wed 10 March), George, The Whitlams and Mark Seymour (EntCent, Thurs 11 March), Blink-182 and Brand New (EntCent, Sat 13 March), Placebo and Elbow (Thebbie, Mon 15 March) and Richard Thompson (Gov, Wed 17 March)! Phew!

It’s the season for reformations, fa la la la la etc. First up, as announced in last issue’s Industry column (and despite years of acrimony between Frank Black and bassist/Breeders fronterperson Kim Deal) the Pixies have reformed for a series of shows in Canada, the US and the UK. Depending on how things pan out there might be an all-new album around the end of the year – and there’s already rumours floating around about slots on a certain touring festival in Australia early next year…

Secondly, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions are reforming for a couple of shows in the UK in October to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their debut album, ‘Rattlesnakes.’ There are also plans afoot for a redux edition with unreleased tracks, b-sides and live tracks from the period. Ah, to be in Glasgow in the autumn…

Apparently all of the “cheap” tickets for David Bowie have long since gone, so if you’re planning on seeing a living legend at the EntCent on Mon 23 Feb – and how likely is it that you’ll get the chance again? – you’re going to have to fork out for the fancy seats. And you’d better do that pretty darn soon, might Puff add.

In last issue the Prince Albert ad erroneously claimed that the fine venue was shut on Sat 21 Feb, so let Puff put the record straight: it’s very much open and will be hosting the sweet, sweet sounds of Fear In Dakota and the Dan Woolford Band. Perfect music to enjoy a pint to (or the perfect pints to enjoy music to).

Lovers of experimental dance, sensory deprivation, bizarre medical procedures and all things cyber should make sure they check out ‘The ObCell’ which is running as part of the Fringe. Billed as “an interactive human experiment” it’s happening at the Dunstan Playhouse Foyer STC Rehearsal Room 2 from Sat 21 Feb to Sat 28 Feb (no Monday show).

Mr Paul Kelly has just released his rather splendid ‘Ways & Means’ album and hence is doing a lap of the country which will see him at Her Majestys Theatre on Wed 5 May.

Reckon it’s hot now? Then wait for Scorcher in the Southwest Parklands (corner of South & West Tce) on Sun 29 Feb with an all-day lineup of Colorblind, The Lapdogs, Hairy Lemon, The Seeds Of Babylon, The Chase, Illicit Eve, Foreshore, The Pales, Soursob Bob, The Castonets, Dawn Star, The Lazeeboyz, Pete Wilson, Kylie, Linda Ramsay, Luke Ashby, Moore Black, Glu and Sole Sista. What’s more, it’s all-ages.

The Adelaide Uni O-Ball is boasting one of the best lineups in recent memory with Augie March, Little Birdy, Pornland, Epicure, Ground Components, Wolf & Cub and Cookie Baker all performing on the Armoury Lawns (in behind the Art Gallery of SA) on Fri 27 Feb. Best of the all, tickets are only $16 for this feast of entertainment (and even less if you’re an Adelaide Uni student!).

Not to be outdone, the Flinders Uni O-Ball is going to rock you like a you-rocking thing on Sat 27 March with a punktastic lineup that already includes the Bouncing Souls, Frenzal Rhomb and Dropkick Murphys!

They’re straight outta Detroit, they’ve been hailed as the latest saviours of rock’n’roll, and their lead singer Jason Stollsteimer got into a well-publicised punch up with Jack White: they’re the Von Bondies, their album ‘Pawn Shoppe Heart’ will be out any second, and they’ll be here at Enigma on Wed 7 April.

All that, and the Fringe to boot! That’s got to be enough reason to...
