Puff 'n' Stuff.
Now, Puff might be reading a bit much into hearsay, but reckons
there might just be something on at the Wayville Showgrounds
on Fri 30 Jan. Apparently it's an entire day's worth of music,
and preliminary reports suggest that it's also quite big - we'll
have more details as they come to hand.
But let’s not get sidetracked by days, however
big and out they might be: Puff’s damn sure that there are some
CD launches happening in this fair city: such as the one for
The Chase, who launch ‘Audio Diversion’ at Jive on Sat 7 Feb,
along with Foreshore, Sumi and Somersault.
Also on the CD launching trail are such diverse acts as guitarslingers Remedy, who launch at Prince Albert on Sat 31 Jan; jazz-folkers Pfea, who launch 'Departures' at Seppelt’s Winery in the Barossa Valley on Sat 31 Jan; and funklords The New White Sneakers, who set their debut free at Fowlers Live on Sat 7 Feb with DJs Madness and Pro-Logic, plus breakdancers from Da Klinic.
Those kooky kids from The Big Band (previously
known as the Home For the Def Big Band – but not anymore, you
got that?) are launching their CD at the Jade Monkey on Fri
13 Feb, along with three-d radio favourites Toit and the dirty
men of Sex Hurricane 1975.
And it doesn’t stop there! The Pales (or, as Puff might well call them, The Artists Formerly Known As Kurb) launch their ‘Walk Away’ CD-EP at the Enigma Bar on Sat 28 Feb, along with The Phobias, and Foreshore have an all-ages launch for their new one at Jive on Sat 6 March, along with Radiophobia and Special Patrol.
August Falls are bidding bassist Andrew "Wash"
Washington a fond farewell with an adieu at Jive on Sat 31 Jan.
Fighterpilot will be on hand with the tissues. It’ll be the
last August Falls show for a bit, as they train up their new
member and finish up their CD before heading around the nation
and to the US later this year.
The Flinders Uni O-Ball is looking absolutely punktastic with
a lineup that already includes the Bouncing Souls, Frenzal Rhomb
and the Dropkick Murphys, who’ll be showing The Kids how it’s
done on Sat 27 March!
On Thurs 5 Feb the Grace Emily will be filled
with the lilting acoustic stylings of troubadour d Henry Fenton,
who also took the dbmagazine.com.au Seven Questions – Of Fame!
challenge. Check his answers right now. Go on.
The first announcement for the Fifteenth Annual East Coast East Coast Blues & Roots Festival has come through, and it’s the dooziest of doozies! For one thing they’ve secured James Brown – yes, THE James Brown – at the head of an all-star lineup that also includes Solomon Burke, Jackson Browne, The Black Keys, Richard Thompson, Dr John, Taj Mahal, the John Butler Trio, Pharoah Sanders, The Waifs, The String Cheese Incident, Luka Bloom, the Cat Empire and the North Mississippi Allstars. And that’s just for starters! It’s all happening over the Easter Weekend (Thurs 8 April to Mon 12 April) in Byron Bay’s Red Devil Park – check out www.bluesfest.com.au for updates.
Ronnie Taheny makes her graceful annual migration
back to Adelaide for a hometown show at the Gov on Sat 7 Feb.
Speaking of returning SA types, Jude Elliot has returned from a year in Melbourne to front The J’s, but she’s not neglecting her solo career: there’s an album on the horizon with a single in the next few months, and gigs at the Prince Albert on Fri 30 Jan and the Grace Emily on Wed 4 Feb.
Jot Fri 6 Feb in your rock’n’roll diaries, readers, since that
is when Manic Distortion (featuring members of Nihilism, Gasket
and The Bloodsucking Freaks) make their first foray onto a local
stage at the Austral. Black Belt Jones and Discord will also
be along for the ride.
Looking forward to seeing Canada’s mighty The Weakerthans at Enigma in February? Puff surely was, but sadly the whole Australian tour is off for the time being. Hopefully a reschedule is on the cards for later this year.
How ultra-cool is this? Japan’s premier musical
experimentalist Masami Akita, better known to the world as Merzbow,
is coming to the Big Star basement for one very, very special
show on Mon 9 Feb.
You may have noticed that the city was up to its collective neck in Scouts over the past couple of weeks. Swarms of them had swept in from all over the planet for the International Scout Jamboree, an event which saw a bunch of artists strut the stage – including Lazaro’s Dog and Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian– and, as this pic reveals, they were also seen to share a sandwich or two (left to right: Guy Sebastian, a plate of food, Vic Pisani from Lazaro’s Dog, the late Chief Inspector Conway from ‘The Bill.’ Apparently.)
The Adelaide Fringe is just around the corner
and next issue Puff will be taking a long, hard look at what’s
coming up – but for starters, make sure you close your Fringe
experience with ‘Acquiecence: Not Dreaming, Creating’ at Higher
Ground on Sun 14 March. It’s a huge showcase of some of Adelaide’s
most talented visual artists and electronic composers, as well
as having a pretty damn fine lineup of bands, including Special
Patrol, ASD, Angelik, Virgin Black, Muscle Car and Baby Doll
– and that’s just for starters. There’s no better way to cap
your Fringe – right, Virgin Black?
Little Birdy are about to release their second EP, but before they do they’re embarking on a lap of the country and will be at the Enigma Bar on Sat 7 Feb (along with Theredsunband and Shane Shepherd). What’s more, they’ve taken the dbmagazine.com.au Seven Questions – Of Fame! challenge this issue. You know you want to read it.
A bunch of tours have been announced: Francoiz
Bruet will bring her sultry French pout to Fowlers Live on Sun
15 Feb, former Ride frontman Mark Gardener has been confirmed
for Jive on Wed 3 March, Bluebottle Kiss and Big Heavy Stuff
join forces for a double-header at Enigma on Sat 6 March, Blink-182
punk up the EntCent on Sat 13 March, Placebo and Ellbow are
coming to Thebbie on Mon 15 March, Counting Crows do the same
on Mon 29 March, and introspective Swedish/Scottish chap Magnet
is doing a very special show at the Grace Emily on Sun 7 March.
Speaking of tickets for things, you know that Thursday/Poison The Well double bill has sold out for the UniBar on Sat 31 Jan? Well, let this be an omen: Puff reckons that you might well want to grab tickets for Peaches at the Enigma Bar on Thurs 29 Jan (with Team Plastique and Bit By Bats) and the Beth Orton and M Ward show at Norwood Concert Hall on Thurs 12 Feb before you rock up – assuming there are still tickets to get by the time you read this...
And while we’re on the subject: there are
delicious tour rumours floating around at the moment for New
York noiseniks The Bronx and ultra-cred indie gods Grandaddy.
Puff’s a little bit excited, frankly.
Hey! You! Were you in an Adelaide band in the late 80s/early 90s? Wondering what it’d be like to get the old team back together for a night? Then drop a line to Sue Hedley at Rising Star Music (admin@risingstar.com.au) and register for ‘Back To The 80s: Take 3’ at the Gov on Sun 15 Feb, or just bring your instrument and jam with the provided backline.
Are you a local musical act? Interesting?
Fancy being part of an end-of-summer festival? Andrew Cooper
is looking for acts for the Scorcher Festival – email riffind@senet.com.au
for all the details.
That gentleman of the blues we know as Mr Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges has spent the last 12 months playing in Spain, Portugal, the UK, Slovenia and most places in between, but he’s returning to the Governor Hindmarsh for a show on Thurs 5 Feb.
Oh come on: there’s a million gigs on, the
Big Day Out’s happening in mere seconds, the Fringe, the Festival
and WOMAD are just around the corner - what more do you need
to encourage you to...
