Fans of Pantera lamenting their demise (they broke up last year after the departure of front-man Phil Anselmo) may be heartened to hear of Damageplan, a new band put together by former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul. This group - whose line-up also includes former Halford guitarist Patrick Lachman on vocals - has put out its debut album, ‘New Found Power’: a recording whose material has been described by one source as displaying more diversity than anything Damageplan’s founding members produced while in their former band: "Damageplan embrace contemporary textures reminiscent of Deftones, heavy melodies like Sevendust’s, and even industrial experimentation owing a nod to Nine Inch Nails." Nonetheless, the old Pantera sound is still an unmistakable presence, as early attempts to eradicate all trace of it met with failure. According to Darrell, "I tried all these different guitars and amps I don’t normally play, trying to get something different out of the deal, but nothing sounded right. Then I realized the Pantera sound is the old-school sound of me and Vinnie ripping it up and anything we play is always gonna sound like us." The band’s first single, Save Me, revolves around the band members’ struggle to overcome depression and frustration (presumably during the group’s turbulent beginning period), and has been described as one of the more accessible tracks on ‘New Found Power’.
