Puff 'n' Stuff.

So, this is 2004 then? Five years into the new millennium and Puff STILL doesn’t have a rocket pack. Sixties science fiction has a lot to answer for. In any case, all of Team dB Magazine had a splendid holiday, thanks, and have returned refreshed and reinvigorated – well, except Curtis the dB Magazine meerkat, who developed something of an egg nog problem over the festive season and is still curled up in a ball alternately snarling and sobbing. Puff’s been forced to send him to a fancy sanatorium to clean up - and he’d better clean up real fast, since 2004 is already shaping up to be a hectic year that’s chock full of the good stuff – heck, just looking at the next few months we’ve got the Big Day Out, the Fringe, the Festival of Arts, WOMADelaide, the Cabaret Festival… actually, just thinking about it, Puff could kinda go some egg nog too – just for medicinal purposes, you understand…

Many of our city’s talented musical types have been hard at work over the break; including punkers The Jerks who are launching their ‘Revolution Time’ CD at Fowlers Live on Fri 6 Feb.

Charmingly-monikered locals The Meatbeaters are launching their ‘Professional Boozers & Love Machines’ CD in the Governor Hindmarsh’s balcony bar on Fri 16 Jan, with NFI, Black Belt Jones and Nihilism along for the ride.

Pfea are launching their ‘Departures’ CD in the swanky surrounds of the Seppelt’s Winery in the Barossa Valley on Sat 31 Jan, but for those who can’t make it they’re having a post-launch show at the Wheatsheaf Inn in Gawler on Sun 1 Feb.

Dom Guida is also in a launching mood – his solo acoustic CD-EP is set free at the Governor Hindmarsh on Sun 18 Jan.

The Chase are also in a CD launching mood – they’re launching their ‘Audio Diversion’ CD-EP at Jive on Sat 7 Feb, along with Foreshore and Somersault.

The Hunting Season (or Several Of The Artists Formerly Known As Lifo) have also been hard at work consolidating a new lineup and set over the last year or so, and you can enjoy the fruits of their labours when they play their first ever gig at the Jade Monkey on Fri 16 Jan Russian Teammate before supporting Kaleidoscope at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 24 Jan. Expect to see a single emerge sometime mid-year.

It’s been six years since we’ve seen southern legends The Bearded Clams cavort upon a stage, but they’re reforming for a one-off show at the Port Noarlunga Football Club on Fri 16 Jan to launch their ‘Sonic Wave’ CD with Psycho Green and State Of Disorder. It’s all ages to boot!

2004 even heralds the return of some of Adelaide’s errant rock’n’roll sons when Glen & The Peanut Butter Men pop back to their old hometown from their new digs in Melbourne to launch their new CD ‘Ready To Blow’ at Jive on Fri 16 Jan, supported by Babydoll and Kamikaze.

But as the new year dawns, some bands decide to call it a day - Epic Land Battles take their final bow with their last ever show at the Governor Hindmarsh front bar on Sat 17 Jan.

The good people of Roaring Silence are putting another impressive all-ages lineup together for a show at Fowlers Live on Fri 23 Jan, with J-Ded, Impunity, and The News doing it for The Kids. Isn’t that true, J-Ded?

Have you got your ticket to the Thursday and Poison The Well show at Adelaide UniBar on Sat 31 Jan? No? Then you’d better hope someone else grabbed you one as a special surprise, since the show’s completely sold out.

For those who can’t wait for David Bowie at the EntCent in February, the Weimar Room will give you as close an experience of The Dame as possible, thanks to Denis Kirkham’s performance in the Dream Reality Show. He’ll be performing songs from all Bowie eras for two shows: pre view on Thurs 15 Jan, whole shebang on Sat 17 Jan. It’s the first in the Weimar Room’s series of tribute nights, which are set to continue with the likes of Tom Lehrer, Spike Jones, Marlene Deitrich, Grace Jones and Tom Waits.

Southern youth, take note: Glenelg Surf Lifesaving Club does it for the kids again on Sat 17 Jan with Error, Is This Art? and Special Patrol.

They’re warriors – of steel! They’re Raven Black Night, Skintilla, Val Hull and Juggermath and they’re joining forces for Steelwarriors II at the Enigma Bar on Fri Jan 16.

Puff’s heart missed a beat with the announcement that legendary UK post-punk masters Wire are doing a brace of shows in Australia this March… except that it’s only up the east coast. Dammit.

Also avoiding Adelaide are Scots-flavoured punkers The Real McKenzies (who are even doing Perth, for god’s sake!) and the Dropkick Murphys. Sigh.

However, Puff is delighted to announce that torchy French indie-chanteuse Francoiz Bruet is coming to Adelaide for a gloriously sultry night of sweet melody at Fowlers Live on Sun 15 Feb.

And the touring rumours have already started – expect announcements shortly for a whole swag of touring, including The Black Keys, former Ride frontman Mark Gardener and Blink-182.

Ah, that Britney Spears knows how to kick off the year and enliven a slow night in Las Vegas; her spur-of-the-moment marriage to childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander on Sat 3 Jan ended with an annulment 55 hours later. And Puff really thought those crazy kids could make it work…

The good people of Adelaide Rock Ladies aren’t happy about being back at uni and school, and they figure you’re probably not either. Hence, they’ve decided to put on a bunch of Adelaide’s finest at Jive Wed 21 Jan and channel that disappointment into some sweet, sweet melody, as channelled through Brillig, Hello Minnesota!, Star 10 Hash and The Ramonettes, plus DJ Kix2 and master of ceremonies Cuchulain JC

Melbourne rock kids The Kits are coming to town for shows at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 16 Jan (with Fighterpilot) and Sat 17 Jan at the Exeter – and what’s more, they take this issue’s Seven Questions – Of Fame! challenge online at dbmagazine.com.au.

Mr Karl Melvin, local music identity and evil genius behind local label A Perfect Gentleman, is celebrating his birthday with a self-aggrandising night of Melvinity at the Jade Monkey, with the likes of Home For The Def, Ianto Ware, The Radar B, Hit The Jackpot and The Weary Dunlops serenading him, and possibly you, on Sun 25 Jan.

Yee haw, pardners: never mind the eastern states, the annual Shamworth festival is happening at the Grace Emily on Sun 25 Jan, with an all-star lineup of The Dolls, Longhorn and Fish Shop Phil & the Wild Sea Horses.

Hey, filmaking types! Got your Tropfest entry done? What? You haven’t? Well, you’d better pull your finger out – entries close at 6pm EST on Thurs 15 Jan, so if you haven’t got your seven minute long film, which contains this year’s signature item (“hook”), in an overnight bag to the good folks at Tropfest by now, you’ve probably left your run a bit late…

Congratulations to locals Day Of Contempt, who spent the first half of January supporting Good Charlotte through Japan. They're spending a week gigging in Perth before heading home to start writing the follow up to "See Through The Lies". Puff hopes they get a bit of a breather while they're here.

Skateboarding types, take note: since they’re currently holding the ‘Sessions: the evolution of skateboarding’ exhibition, the South Australian Museum are making a world record attempt for the longest continuous line (end to end) of skateboarders on skateboards at 10am on Sat 17 Jan. Legendary skater Tony Hallam will be there to supervise, there’ll be random giveaways, tours of the exhibition and your name could be immortalised as being part of a long line of skating people. Bring your deck, mind.

Canadian folk miss Ember Swift has been doing a lap of the country, including performing at the Falls Festival and any pub she comes across, and she’ll be in Adelaide for a show at Jive on Sat 24 Jan, supported by Fruit’s Mel Watson.

Get up on that thing! Gang Starr are coming to town (you know, Guru and DJ Premier? Just to Get A Rep? Yes, that’s them), and they’ll be at Heaven on Tues 3 Feb, with support from Funkoars, Kim Dezen and Reflux.

Looking forward to seeing Canada’s mighty The Weakerthans at Enigma in February? Puff surely was, but sadly the whole Australian tour is off for the time being.

Screamfeeder are heading back to Adelaide to share pieces of their freshly-baked new album with hungry audiences: they’re doing two nights at the Jade Monkey on Thurs 5 Feb (with Russian Teammate and The Hunting Season) and Fri 6 Feb (with The Laybacks). All this, and the year's barely begun! Puff's got one piece of advice for the rest of the year, dear readers:
