War All The Time Thursday
War All The Time
Island/UMG

I’ll state it from the outset: this is the best hard rock album since At The Drive In set the world on fire with ‘Relationship Of Command.’ Lots of bands claim to be melodic hardcore but rarely get the balance right, usually erring on the side of hardcore, but Thursday have nailed it here: ‘War All The Time’ is a passionate and stirring release, worthy of the attention of anyone who likes their music with a harder edge.

At times Thursday could be labelled emo but they avoid the trap of becoming one-dimensional by varying their intensity and pace and using a clever mix of singing and screaming throughout this release. ‘War All The Time’ is unashamedly inspired by recent political events and the craziness of it all, and while lyrically it’s clever without being preachy, it's the music that really stands out and excites the soul.

The intense hardcore sounds are evident right fom the opening For The Workforce, Drowning; huge guitars, superb drum rolls and cool vocals. Division St could easily be a single, as Thursday build to a crescendo with patches of fast guitars before stripping it all back to launch into a huge chorus that’s perfect for a singalong. This well-structured album continues to swell in intensity to the raw hardcore coda of Marches And Maneuvers, only to allow the listener some respite with the beautifully mellow (but equally powerful) Asleep In The Chapel. Thursday’s majesty shines through the piano-based balladry of This Song Brought To You By A Falling Bomb only to have the rock roar back into action for Steps Ascending. Then there’s the anthemic title track that I’m sure will prove to be a live favourite, with its personal lyrics and rousing emo feel.

If you are going to the Big Day Out, you will need to hear ‘War All The Time’ beforehand so you can fully appreciate the band that promises to rock the hardest of all. Get on the Thursday bandwagon before you miss out.
