What the hell is happening??? As Adelaide awakes from its winter hibernation, maybe the cold froze too many heads and people are going crazy! Big news of the week, however, is that Minke has closed its doors. Yup! One of Adelaide's coolest venues has shut down, leaving promoters frantically trying to secure other venues for their touring acts. Then there have been some well-publicised altercations at Soda and Garage, while over at Heaven John Morley has resigned and Souli is taking over Chemistry. There've also been rumours of certain other venues having their electricity cut off... what's going on, people?
Because of the shutdown of Minke, the Fabric crew will be taking time off while they look for a new venue for the summer. The good news is even if they have to do it in my backyard, Infusion will be playing here in December!
But onto good news, and hip-hop outfit Hilltop Hoods had a massive 1800 people attend their record launch, the biggest turn out of any local act in recent history. And as part of Triple J's Oz Music Month, the Hoodies have been asked to perform live to air at the UniBar. Super Request will be held on Mon 3 Nov from 4:30pm, and feature a live 40 minute set, and best of all entry is free - but get there early because there's limited capacity!
Prepare for Fright Night as Adelaide's scariest mansion, The Cumberland Arms, becomes the Haunted House on Halloween, Fri 31 Oct. Become bewitched by the ghoulish sounds of Brendan, Lachie Pender, K2 and Mal, plus a spooky drag show out in the forbidden garden.
Joining in on the celebrations of the occult, The Griffin's Head presents Halloween Clubfest, with DJs spread across the four areas including JoSH, DriLLer, Madusa, Noodle & The Activist, Mark J, Adam Yummm, Rodstar, Luc, and KP Star vs Goldie.
And on the same night you can be watched by spooks of all kinds at Surveillance, as the fourth instalment hosted by Mark 7 and Restless sees Hooligan Soul perform live at Traffic alongside the Move crew Djon and Spark, with BankC and Harass.
If that all seems too scary for you, then head down to Mojo West for the sweet sounds of Hooligan Jam. Join DJs Funky J, G-Swift, Pab, Didge and guests as you're taken through the sounds of hip-hop, breaks and garage. Yes, I said last time that it was on Oct 24, but October has 5 weeks, doesn't it! *me grumbles at stupid dead Roman rulers for stuffing up the Calender*.
The Gov is still kicking along nicely, and for your aural delights on Sat 1 Nov they present Endorphin alongside DJ Archie and the unpigeonholable Amoeba. Endorphin is an Adelaide favourite, and with his dancer Ivan Medel and stilt walker Tom Parris, he will weave an eclectic array of visual imagery and music to create a live production that will seduce the senses.
Cisco Nights at Savvy is to feature nothing but the funkiest, deepest, sexiest house and breaks all night long on Sat 1 Nov. With Free entry and drinks specials, your hand picked Funkaticions for the night are Lachlan Pender, Matt Parker, Antiks, Schona plus guests.
Drumz continues to bring only the best in d'n'b, so get ready to shake your booty at Traffic on Fri 7 Nov with MC Cleveland Watkiss from the UK and DJ Patife from Brazil, alongside Adelaide's best selektas John Doe, MPK, Noddy, Harass, Rayda, Vilen, and MCs Pab, G-Swift and Xpress.
Then, for more internationally flavoured d'n'b madness, head up to the all ages Mylor Rukkas on Sat 8 Nov. Featuring Kaji Peace from Japan, Hooligan Soul and SA's Rukkas will battle it out with WA's Rollers. Details available from Chapel Gesture.
There's a host of other international acts coming for summer. Not only is there Enchanted with their massive line up, but the biggest DJ in the world Carl Cox is set to hit us in December. Freq Nasty will also play early December, while Hyper and Shimon confirmed for NYE. Public Enemy are still on their way down in December, as are Cypress Hill (Tues 9 Dec at the Planet), and rumours of a massive beach party featuring Crazy Penis, Blackalicious, Andy C & GQ, and Tayo is set to take place next January.
So despite the loss of Minke, it still looks to be a great summer!
