I was going to start this fortnights' column with something lame like "warm up these cold winter days with rah rah rah", but all in all it hasn't been that cold and miserable. In fact, as I write this, the sun is shining and it's quite warm! Way to spoil my intro, Global Warming!
I think I got too excited last time, and put in way too many events I should have saved for the coming editions, but with so much cool stuff coming up I couldn't keep it to myself! So please excuse me if I sound like I'm repeating myself. But for a town that's meant to be sleepy, especially during winter, there's certainly a lot on!
Thurs 24 July sees Frantic resident DJ Steve Hill spark the Chemistry crowd at Heaven. On Fri 25 July, Heaven turns as hot as hell, as it launches Australia's next R'n'B Super Star: The J Wess Project launches their debut single Bang This. And on Sat 26 July DJ Jason Bye will be rocking the crowd.
On Fri 25 July, Luke Solomon (Derrick Carter's label and production partner plays) at Music for Freaks at Minke. For the Tech Heads, TurboFunk at Visions (St Pauls) on Sat 26 July is set to sizzle with Adam J. Also, inthemix.com joins Directions at Traffic on Saty 26 July. DJs on the night are the ITM Up-and-Comer Brendon, Mal Chia, Damage, Reelax, Lachlan Pender and more.
Sat 26 July also finds the original Adelaide drum'n'bass as United Minds of Sound return to the scene with State of Bass, a stomping night of Drum and Bass at The Griffins Head. Special guests from Melbourne's Terrain Crew, DJs Motive and Sean, will be joined by Adelaide's best d'n'b DJs Patch, Filter, Noddy, and Evn Vs Fiction, with live act Hooligan Soul. Also that night the Beat Smugglers bring their party jams to the Rhino Room with DJs Kim Dezen, Stephen King, Grif and Shep, plus the Resident Smuggler Artists.
1200 Techniques and Kut Masta Kurt are set to rock the Governor Hindmarsh on Thurs 31 July, whilst Fri 1 August sees Adelaide's best hiphop DJs throw it down at the DMC Technics World DJ Championship with Hilltop Hoods, Bones and DJ Next, hosted by Traffic. On Sat 2 Aug Boom presents a smorgasbord of hip hop and funk featuring special guest G-San from Melbourne town, plus Pat Cronin, Kim Dezen, Tightpants, Delta, Kab and Chelvis at the Rhino Room.
Still want more? Also on Sat 2 August Total Kaos and Sound of Now present the Bass Station "Global Movement" Tour with Melbourne's 1LC and Adelaide's Turbine Crew representing d'n'b, and Dirk Nothroff aka DJ The Crow, David Rzenno, and Jason Midro banging out the hard house at St Pauls.
Continuing a strange but seemingly successful phenomenon, Sunday 3 August finds Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez playing a four hour set at a two level party at Minke. If the massive success of Dimitri at Savvy is anything to go by, then I'm sure we'll continue to see more big acts hit our shores on Sunday Nights.
And the final event I've got details for DJ Bailey on Thurs 7 Aug at Traffic. Whew!
And there's a lot more coming to Adelaide! Foreign Legion, Naughty By Nature, a Ministry of Sound Breaks Tour, The Jungle Brothers, Scratch Perverts, Krafty Kuts, DJ Marky & Stamina MC, LAB 4, Karri K, Kultcha, Billy Bunter, Jon Doe, DIP, Justin Bourne, Captain Tinrib, Banga Matt, Sharkey, Simon Eve, The Japanese Frantic Invasion pt II, Marcus Intalex, Klute and Gachet, are all about to hit town in the next few months, so stay tuned to these pages for interviews and further news!
