Say Kids, what time is it?

It's time to bid a fond farewell to Terry Goldfain. Terry has been coordinating dB Magazine's dance music section, producing the news section, and been a generally good fellow for a while now, but due to time constraints and the fact that he lives in a whole other city, he felt it was time to leave us, and give us a chance to inject some new perspectives into the news by someone who is a little more local. We wish Terry a fond farewell, and no doubt will see the odd article from him appear in these pages.

And now you're stuck with me. MAUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

My name is Julian Cram, aka Funky J and I've been involved with the dance music scene for over 10 years, mainly as a punter, but more recently as a practitioner and critic. I hope to keep up Terry's superb work on the dance music news, keeping you informed and hopefully amused, as well as adding my own take on the scene in Adelaide. But enough about me, onto the news, because as usual, there's a hell of a lot of good stuff coming up!

By now everybody knows about Enchanted Winter Edition on Sat 5 July, with international acts such as Paul Glazby, Grooverider, Sonic, Daniel Ro, Ade Fenton, PQM, Gwill Morris and Australia's finest Bexta, Hooligan Soul, Dave Pham, Systembot and fenetik, plus the finest local DJ talent Adelaide has to offer, but recent rumours point to it being TWICE as big. Check www.system6.doof.org for more details.

Speaking of twice, if you missed Karim at Karma at Le Rox you should note that he's back for another show on Thu 26 June at Heaven. Even I've got to admit Karim is a damn good DJ, so if you haven't seen him before then you've got another chance. Don't miss out!

I don't know if you've noticed, but DJs like playing long sets. An hour is just not enough to work a crowd into a frenzy. To address this, Traffic has DJ's Delight on the last Friday of every month. John Doe and MPK are joined by another Adelaide local to present six hours of the finest dance floor dnb around. Fri 27 June sees this highly successful night joined by the very talented DJ Noddy.

And, I gotta give myself a plug, because no one else does it! Hooligan Jam is also on the last Friday of the month at Mojo West. This popular night (it is! I'm not saying that just because I play there!) starts with funk, breaks, and occasionally hiphop, and winds its way into two-step and garage. This month Funky J joins regulars Pab, Griff and Didge on Fri 27 June.

If you have sore feet, relax into the comfy surrounds of the Crown & Sceptre and squeeze into some New White Sneakers on Sat 28 June. Formally known as The George Special, this dynamite 6-piece funk act have been blowing up all over town recently with new vocalist Holly Backler on lead vocals.

If you're up for a change of pace and location, you can't beat Home Grown at The Vines NightClub, Berri, on Sat 28 June. This regular night of the best beats and grooves provided by DJs Sav, Scidz, Jimm-E, and Halogen, is becoming quite an established event in the Riverland.

If you like your hardcore, and really, who doesn't like loud, banging noises with lots of sped up hiphop vocals, then don't miss Planet HardKore at the Planet, Sat 5 July, as Rob Gee returns to makes a mockery of your eardrums.

From the ridiculous to the sublime, do not miss Adam Freeland at Traffic on Fri 18 July. This guy is pure genius, and his club sets are something to behold. Mixing with 3 decks and 2 CDs, he takes you on a journey through the finest that breaks have to offer.

More breaks later in the year with Kid Kenobi coming back, no doubt showcasing the best in the more housey side of breaks. Also returning to our shores is NinjaTune's Herbaliser. If you haven't seen them, all I can say is GO! As I am wearing my NinjaTune sweat shirt right now, it's no surprise I'm counting the days to September!

Speaking of breaks, are you aged 26 years or under with a passion to develop your Arty-ness? Need some money to do it? Then you may be eligible for one of the Scholarships from the South Australian Youth Arts Board (SAYAB). They're offering up to $38,000 of dosh, so if you're interested and would like information on the applications then contact SAYAB on 8361 9777 or email sayab@sayab.org.au . Or simply hit the website www.sayab.org.au, download a form, and fill it in today! Be quick though, closing date is Fri 25 July.

Plus here are some bass-filled (as opposed to baseless) rumours that are floating around. Coming up we're graced with more of the best DJs of all forms of dance music, such as techno supremo Adam J, d'n'b greats Marcus Intalex + Klute and Bailey, and old school hero Dr S Gatchet. If you like it hard, then the System 6 Crew has LAB 4, Karri K, Kultcha, Billy Bunter, and Jon Doe live all coming in the next few months!

Stop the Presses: heard a rumour that the very smooth LTJ Bukem is playing at a VIP event somewhere in Adelaide. Apparently you need an invite to get in, and need to be at the upstairs venue before 11pm, but downstairs will be piping the music, so if you can't see him, you can still enjoy the music. Not sure if I'm allowed to say the venue, but it rhymes with Blinky.

Got news?
PHEW! If I've missed you out, blame Terry. And so you don't get missed out again, send any dance music news to ,
