All quiet on the southern front! With the onset of winter, overseas and interstate talent visiting Adelaide has turned from a deluge to a trickle. This is, of course, despite the best efforts of venues like Minke who recently hosted DJ Krush and Dynamo Productions and have Mark Rae just around the corner. Traffic too have been ensuring Adelaide isn’t forgotten with James Zabiela, and breaks legend Lee Coombs in June. Other venues such as Sugar have taken a different approach, concentrating on fostering local talent and it seems to be working, as slowly but surely the venue formerly known as Q is getting busier and busier.
Perhaps some rest is best considering Enchanted: Winter Edition is not that far away with an awesome lineup that already includes Paul Glazby, Daniel Ro, Gwill Morris (Main Element), PQM, Grooverider, Sonic, Ade Fenton and Bexta - and apparently this is only the tip of the iceburg. Then, before you know it, Stardust Spring Sessions, considered by many to be the best event last year, will be on our doorstep with James Holden and Steve Gerrard (Bedrock Breaks) already strongly tipped to be appearing, so catch up on sleep while you can.
Even so, here are some teasers to whet the appetite: while none of these acts, to my knowledge, have been booked for Adelaide shows yet, they’ll all be in Australia in the next few months and with the fantastic promoters we have over here it’s likely that quite a number of them will reach us. If you like your beats broken, then your draw will drop to the floor while you read this: Adam Freeland, LTJ Bukem, Scratch Perverts, Plump DJs, Rennie Pilgrem, Tayo and Meat Katie. However, if you’re a mechanical girl in a mechanical world this lineup of techno acts should provide the lube for you to tighten your nuts and bolts: Stacey Pullen, Ade Fenton, Luke Solomon, Chris Liebing, Terry Lee Brown, DJ Misjah, Kevin Saunderson, Devilfish, Deetron, Ben Sims and Marco Bailey. And there were some house and trance acts in there too, so nobody can say I discriminate!
Isn’t internet radio grand? It doesn’t matter if your local radio sucks. You can tune in every day to one of a million shows out there that cater to your every whim and fancy no matter how obscure your musical taste is. Fancy yourself as the next Pete Tong presenting your ‘Essential Selection’? You can take a step in the right direction as Carclew Youth Arts Centre is offering creative workshops for 16-26 year olds in July on DIY Internet Broadcast. Whether your interest is in radio, music, performance, art or video/film, this workshop will incorporate ways of integrating various media to create a ‘do it yourself’ online broadcast. There seems to have been a revival in Australian hip hop recently and if you’ll forgive the pun, Sydney Hip Hop crew The Herd are leading the pack. The Herd have supported everyone from Grandmaster Flash and Spearhead to Blackalicious and Anticon, and have had plenty of Triple J airplay with their recent tune Burn Down The Parliament. They’ll be grazing in Adelaide at Rhino Room on Fri 30 May and The Crown & Sceptre on Sat 31 May.
It hasn’t been that long since Infusion returned to Australia, yet they’re back on the plane in June for a ten-stop tour of the USA and Canada. But not before they complete a new track for the upcoming film ‘One Perfect Day’ as well as working with Lucien Foort in between his Australian tour dates. In more Infusion news, they have a remix on Cass’s newie Kenjin set for release on Saw recordings (Satoshi Tommie’s label) on August 4 as well as a remix collaboration with Gwill Morris on a track called Will you Ever Come Around by Siloh. This one’s set for a late May release on Baroque’s new imprint, Electrofly. And don’t get me started on the new album which they’re also finishing off!
Melbourne’s breakbeat DJ extraordinaire, Phil K, has a new mix out. Part of the ‘DJ World Series’ for DJmag, Phil is one of only seven DJs from around the world they’ve selected for this series. The concept is that the DJ uses tracks created by producers from their home country, giving a world-wide platform to both the DJ and the producers - such as Luke Chable, Ivan Gough and Nubreed who are all featured on the CD that comes out with DJ Magazine on Fri 30 May (issue 341).
