Starting off with some local news, by all reports (including the gig review in last issue), Kid Kenobi kicked ass a couple of weeks ago. The same crew who brought him over are teaming up with two of Adelaide's best live acts, Beat Smugglers and Magma, and a ton of Adelaide DJing talent for a night at the Rhino Room encompassing all spectrums of the breakbeat sound. DJs include Tiger, Noodle & The Activist, Kim Dezen, Stephen King, Griff, Cal, Nick O and Rory and it all gets syncopated on Fri 23 May for Contraband. Also at Rhino Room you can catch eight piece Sydney Hip Hop outfit The Herd on Fri 30 May.
I think life is a little bit topsy-turvey in Terryland lately as last week I admitted to getting some enjoyment out of listening to the new Pharmacy hard trance CD mixed by ASYS and Hellraiser and this week I'm going to make another weird call by admitting that 'Frantic 02', mixed by Andy Farley is really quite good. Not that there's anything wrong with liking the harder styles of dance music, it just usually isn't my thing. Anyway, to back up the CD release, Andy Farley is touring Australia next month including a gig at Heaven on Sat 7 June. Frantic is a global leader for hard dance, regularly holding nights throughout the world and has had a presence in Australia since '99. Adelaide might have taken its sweet time getting on the bandwagon but with Enchanted Forest favourite Farley at the wheel it will be a journey worth the wait. And the momentum won't slow after this as other's who will be playing Frantic gigs in Adelaide in the not too distant future include Nick Sentience (UK), Steve Hill (UK), Ed Real (UK) and Dave Randall.
Continuing to march to the beat of a harder drum, the Enchanted Forest crew never let up with a huge array of DJs and tours in upcoming months. Next on the musical roundabout is Adrenalin on Sun 18 May (Adelaide Cup Long weekend). Held in Adelaide's favourite rave venue, St Pauls (I don't think Adelaideans realise how luck we are to have a venue like this at our disposal), DJs on the night include Kevin Energy (UK), Brisk (UK), Mike Calender (Vic), Disko Pussy (Vic) and El Hornet (WA)
Another upcoming event from the Enchanted Crew that I haven't mentioned for a while is Enchanted 2003 - Winter edition that takes place on Sat 5 July. Billed as Adelaide's biggest ever indoor party, this should be awesome and another example that Adelaide can throw raves with the world's best. Confirmed so far are Paul Glazby (UK), Daniel Ro (UK), PQM (USA), Ade Fenton (UK), Eric Powell (UK) and Bexta (Aus). Rob Gee is also looking likely and Peshay a maybe.
And in just breaking Enchanted news (these guys are like that battery that won't ever give up!!!) they've secured a 3000acre heavily wooded area for Enchanted Forest on Sat 13 Dec. There hasn't been a real Enchanted FOREST since #2 at Deep Creek Conservation Park. Apparently it's only an hour from the CBD. And a carryover from last year, the Enchanted DVD will be out shortly.
Goldie Goldfain's gig of the fortnight: Club Nation @ Heaven on Sun 18 May. I'll proclaim myself an expert on Lucien Foort (having seen him DJ twice) and say that he creates one of the best vibes I've ever seen from a DJ. The progressive house mixed with tek house he plays is funky and fresh but without ever becoming commercial. Lucien is enough but Smokin Jo on the bill as well makes it an amazing night. She plays great tribal house and has been invited to DJ in N Y with Danny Tenaglia on more than one occasion.
And lastly, here's some advance warning of the next installment of the longest running dance music event in the country, Earthcore, that celebrates its tenth birthday in November. The big daddy of bush doofs, word is that after this one it will be scaled down to a more manageable level. Venue and acts to be announced very soon or for more details check out www.earthcore.com.au. Early bird tix are now available and if any of you are interested in showing them Vics how it's done, SA style, artists, DJs and performers interested in taking part can send demos and information to Earthcore PO BOX 1318 Collingwood, 3066.
