There's
nothing that Puff likes to celebrate more than local CD launches, and
there's a huge range coming up: first cab off the rank is Zero
Return, who are launching their 'Clapping Crowds & Limousine
Rides' within the classy confines of Nexus Cabaret CD launch on Sat 19
Oct.
The
groovy, house-loving sorts of Universal Dust are launching
their debut album 'Orbit' at the Rhino Room on Sat 19 Oct, supported
by Bos Groove and DJs Adam Gardner, Tor, Madness
and Jorge Watts.
The
Gels
are doing a couple of launches in support of their new single Somebody
Someday with Victorian friends The Specimens - they're both
at the Enigma Bar on Fri 11 Oct (along with King Daddy and NFI),
then they head south to the Tonsley Hotel on Sat 12 Oct (with The
Lapdogs).
It
doesn't end there: The Elmores are launching their brand new
'Resonator Country' CD at the Semaphore Workers Club on Sat 19 Oct.
Bergerac
were going to be launching their new single at the Enigma on Sat 12
Oct (along with labelmates Brer Mouse, who are launching their
'Beatlemania' CD), but they've decided instead to make their single Sleep
Attacks exclusively available through the NiceNoise website (www.nicenoise.com.au).
They'd still love to see you at the gig, mind.
Section:386
are having a launch as well - but instead of tunes, they're launching
their threads! They've invited Dissidence, Nevermiss, Counterfeit
and Jettison along to their all-ages merchandising launch at
Music House on Fri 18 Oct
Those
guitar pop lovers Hummel are launching their 'Rhythm Riots'
CD-EP at the Enigma Bar on Fri 25 Oct along with Edison, Sal
Paradise and Career Girls.
And the
CD launches just keep on coming: One Way Out are launching
theirs at the Enigma Bar on Sat 26 Oct with a lineup that includes 99
Reasons Why and Shotpointblank. What's more, there are
upcoming launches for for Lazaro's Dog (Adelaide UniBar, Sat 2
Nov) and Diatribe (Le Rox, Fri 15 Nov).
On a
sadder note, Johnny 7 OMA play their final gig at their second
home, the Wheatsheaf International, on Sun 13 Oct, before they say
'Adios, Amigos' forever at Music House on Sat 26 Oct with friends GT
Stringer, Abbie Cardwell and Tin Can Alley in
attendance.
The
American Public
are all set to to launch their brand new CD-EP 'Contract Killer' at
the Enigma Bar on Sat 2 Nov along with Monté and Tired
Children), but if you simply can't wait you can download the title
track from www.mp3.com.au/track.asp?id=32845
(and hopefully push the track up their charts) - and don't forget you
can also hear the track on 'The Sound Of MISA' compilation that comes
with every copy of the twelfth Music Index Of SA, available
exclusively through your friends at dB Magazine.
Lovers
of interesting, invigorating, experimental electronic music will be
comprehensively catered for with the staggeringly impressive lineup
that Scalene have gathered for their showcase at Minke on Fri 11 Oct:
acclaimed Canadian artist Battery Operated headlines a bill
that includes Bee Woo, Mitchell Akiyama, Neotropic,
Private Benjamin, Emma McRea, DJ Luv, Ollo,
Red Rabbit, Dan Wills, Elendil, the New
Pollutants and Ichanic.
You've
no doubt heard the first announcement for the Big Day Out by now - but
if you've missed it, the Wayville Showgrounds will be the place to be
on Fri 31 Jan with an initial lineup of Foo Fighters, Queens
Of The Stone Age, Deftones, The Music, PJ Harvey,
Wilco, Millencolin, mad postmodern art-punks Chicks
On Speed and Luke Slater, plus an Australian contingent
that includes The Living End, The Vines, Rocket
Science, Pacifier, Frenzal Rhomb, The Hard-Ons,
Bexta, 28 Days, Resin Dogs and 1200 Techniques
- and Puff is both stunned and delighted to hear that Kraftwerk
will be headlining the Boiler Room! Tickets are on sale very shortly,
and the second lineup announcement shouldn't be too far away.
Aussie
blues legend Lez Karski is heading to Adelaide for a show with
his new mob The Nervous Investors, at the Gov on Thurs 10 Oct
in support of their brand new album, 'Bad Hair Day'.
Have
you got your ticket for the Mogwai/…Trail Of Dead/The
D4 show at Music House on Wed 16 Oct yet? If you're dragging your
feet, Puff advises that the show's heading for a sell-out. Here are
the D4, imploring you to hurry up.
On the
other hand, if you were hanging out to see Mr Bob Geldof at
Thebarton Theatre on Sat 12 Oct, you're in for disappointment: Puff's
been told that he's cancelled the show. Similarly, Mr Gene Simmons
won't be dispensing his peculiarly rock brand of wisdom in November
and Ms Denise Drysdale has also postponed her visit to the
Weimar Room this week. And while we're being disappointed, and despite
rumours to the contary, Sleater-Kinney are missing Adelaide on
their national tour in December, as are Arab Strap, who visit
Sydney and Melbourne at the end of October.
But we
are still set to get Morrissey in our little burg: he'll be
flailing with flair at Thebarton Theatre on Thurs 17 Oct. Puff's still
amazed, frankly.
Acappela
quartet The Idea Of North are set to prove that you don't need
instruments in order to rock: they're performing at the Bridgewater
Mill on Thurs 17 Oct and the Pilgrim Church on Fri 18 Oct (along with
the Adelaide Girls Choir) before returning to the Bridgewater
Mill on Sat 19 Oct.
With
their new single Outside Of Me doing, as they say, the
business, Killing Heidi return to the live arena for shows in
October to coincide with the release of their long-awaited 'Present'
album: our regional readers can catch them in Mt Gambier at Shadows on
Thurs 24 Oct and Whyalla's Westlands Hotel on Fri 25 Oct, while
metropolitan gig goers can see them at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 26
Oct and Sun 27 Oct (all ages).
Former Tendahook
keysman Warwick Ing will be tickling the ivories at the Prince
Albert on Thurs 10 Oct, playing two sets (the first on the PA's piano,
the second with his more customary electronic keyboard setup).
Bomba
are returning to Adelaide with their new album 'Solar Plexus' under
their collective arm, and you can catch them at the Governor Hindmarsh
on Thurs 17 Oct, along with The Seen.
Melbourne
band Tamas Wells are heading our way in support of their CD
'Cigarettes, A Tie And A Free Magazine', playing a lunchtime show at
Adelaide Uni on Thurs 17 Oct before heading up to the Grace Emily that
evening. And you can check out the Wells' answers to the
www.dbmagazine.com.au Seven Questions - of Fame! challenge online
right now.
It's a
lonely life on the Rancho del Rock, where Puff and Curtis The dB
Magazine Meerkat live a spartan life on the dusty trail rounding up
Rock for Adelaide's many venues. And it's no easy task, let us tell
you - you wouldn't believe how many tranquilliser darts it took to
knock out Buddy Miller and Bill Chambers so they could
be trussed up and sent to the Governor Hindmarsh for their show on
Thurs 24 Oct. At least John Mayer and Charlton Hill were
easier to subdue for their Gov show on Sat 26 Oct, but The
Butterfly Effect and Another Race climbed up a tree and
refused to come down until Curtis flushed them out for their Fri 1 Nov
show at the Tivoli. Pesky varmints. Now, Swedish songstresses Elmer
were a much easier catch, even if Curtis kept being asking them out as
he packed them off to the Grace Emily for their Wed 6 Nov show, but
that's the last time we try to run Reel Big Fish down - those
ska-punkers just won't stop, even when they're at Heaven on Fri 8 Nov.
Jamiroqui kept evading our nets in the sassiest way imaginable,
but finally fell into Curtis' funk pit which allowed us to cage him
for transport to the EntCent on Sat 9 Nov, but The Waifs took a
chunk out of Puff's ear in a fierce struggle before being knocked out
and delivered to the Gov for their Sun 10 Nov, and don't be fooled by
the apparent tranquility of Nick Barker and former Tiddas
member Sally Dastey - when they're cornered they fight like
savage demons, but Curtis still collared them for their Grace Emily
show on Thurs 14 Nov. Curtis learned the hard way that John Farnham
has a kick like a mule, but that didn't stop him being lured into a
series of gigs at the EntCentre starting on Thurs 21 Nov, much like Chris
Isaac who'll be there on Thurs 28 Nov. Puff's arm still smarts
where Sasha bit him before being caged up and sent to Heaven
for his Thurs 28 Nov show, and you don't want to know what Puff and
Curtis went through to snare the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Papa
Roach for their Hindmarsh Stadium show on Tues 3 Dec - but
thankfully Eskimo Joe, Fear Of Flying and Career
Girls were fast asleep when Curtis spotted them, and since we've
been offered a lucrative offer from Music House to display them on
Thurs 5 Dec, it looks like both Puff and Curtis will finally get out
of the rock-bounty game and go legit.
Planning
a visit to Sydney anytime soon? If you've been tempted to time it to
coincide with the eighth Homebake Festival in the Domain on Sat 7 Dec,
here's a pile of extra reasons to lock it in: they've just announced Gerling,
Killing Heidi (in acoustic mode), David McCormack & The
Polaroids, much-tipped Melbourne rock kids Jet, Waikiki,
Pnau with Kid Kenobi and The Avalanches' James
de la Cruz, The Butterfly Effect, former Ratcat
frontman Simon Day, Laura Imbruglia, Bluebottle Kiss
and Dan Brodie & The Broken Arrows, joining the
already-announced likes of Alex Lloyd, Radio Birdman, Grinspoon,
You Am I, Machine Gun Fellatio, Paul Kelly, Sonicanimation,
Kasey Chambers, Jebediah and local lads Seraphs Coal,
plus many, many more. Check out www.homebake.com.au
for ticketing details.
And the
festival news doesn't stop there: the first announcement for the 10th
Falls Festival has just been made and already the early bird tickets
are selling like particularly warm hot cakes. And you can see why:
they're boasting a lineup of Jack Johnson (playing an
Australian exclusive), Ozomatli, You Am I, The Ataris,
Timo Maas, Machine Gun Fellatio, Rocket
Science and 1200 Techniques, and that's only the first few
of the over fifty acts that will be enjoying New Years at Lorne from
Mon 30 Dec to Wed 1 Jan.
The
Exeter Hotel at Semaphore is gearing up as a live, original venue
again, with a handsome range of shows coming up: first up, Career
Girls shake off their recent live sloth with a couple of sets on
Sat 12 Oct, joined by the ever-charming LeighStarDust, while John
Schumann pops in on Sat 19 Oct, and the coming weeks feature The
Borderers (Sat 26 Oct), Mark Seymour (Sat 16 Nov) and Tim
Finn (Thurs 21 Nov).
Curious
about what's on offer at this year's Music Business Adelaide event in
November? Then you'd best log on to www.mba.on.net
where they've got the entire program up on offer. The full list of
speakers and delegate will be announced in the coming weeks, but
highlights for MBA 2002 thus far include an electronica/hip hop
component to the seminars courtesy of Seb Chan (3D World, Sound
Summit), and the APRA Songwriting Sessions have been expanded with the
addition of an 'Indie Rock' workshop Motorace's Patrick
Robertson and Rick Grossman (ex-Hoodoo Gurus). For
more details call Ben Matson at the MBA office on 8218 8407.
Tickets
to Loudmouth At The Drive on Fri 18 Oct are apparently rushing out the
door - and why wouldn't they, with a line up of Unwritten Law, Rocket
From The Crypt, Sum 41, Bodyjar, The
(International) Noise Conspiracy, Strung Out, One Dollar
Short, Dropkick Murphys, Seraphs Coal and Absent
Minded? Strung Out would like to see you there.
He's
got no objection to hats, Puff's assured: he's Joe Cocker, and
he'll be at the EntCent on Thurs 10 Oct.
And
while we're on the subject of lung-bursting vocalists, Jimmy Barnes
will be sassing it up in the classy environs of the Sky City Casino's
Marble Hall on Tues 15 Oct, Thurs 17 Oct and Fri 18 Oct.
They
liked it so much earlier this year that Chris Finnen, Billy
February and Thom Burns are returning to McLaren Vale's
Singing Gallery on Sat 12 Oct for another night of acoustic action.
Electronic
duo Hamish (named after and featuring Hamish Cowan,
formerly of Cordrazine) have been busy folks this year,
supporting the likes of Dido and Spiritualised in the
eastern states, and finally Adelaide audiences can catch them when
they play at the Enigma Bar on Sun 20 Oct.
If your
groove thing is in need of a good shaking, you'd best make sure that
you're at Rhino Room on Fri 18 Oct when they play host to Morganics
and Elf Transporter.
The
Glenelg Surf Club is back as a venue and will be a-rocking on Sat 12
Oct with a lineup of J-Ded, Fishing With Henry and Sumi
- and best of all, it's all-ages!
It's
been two years of Soliloquy, the monthly solo artist showcase at the
Governor Hindmarsh, and to celebrate founder Matt Reiner has
rounded up some of his favourite performers of the past 24 months and
given them a brief: each one must perform three songs by Neil Finn!
Hence, the Gov's balcony bar will be postively Finnerific on Fri 11
Oct, with performances from The Blue Key Junkies, Ben
Vistoli (Mufi*Dinair), Sasha Pazeski (Career
Girls), James Gary, Luke Ashby, Doug Arnott, Tom
Barnes, Cookie Baker and Mr Reiner himself.
Alt.country
fans, take note! The Harvest Festival is returning to Adelaide over
the weekend of Fri 29 Nov - Sun 1 Dec, hosting Australia's best
alternative country music and rare music film footage. This year the
Grace Emily and the Mercury cinema are joined by the Weimar Room to
host the event, featuring performances by Wagons, Royalchord,
The Drowners, Problem Pony, The Spoils, The
Retreads, Treetops, The Yearlings, Longhorn
and Tuscadero, among others, while the cinema sessions will
feature rare vintage footage of the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou
Harris, Gene Clark, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings,
Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Steve Earle, Johnny
Cash, Guy Clark and The Byrds, plus a special
tribute to The Triffids. For more information about the
festival check out http://welcome.to/harvestfestival.
The
folks from Save the Forest Funk are holding Freedom Funk at the Rhino
Room on Thurs 17 Oct, raising money for Refugee Action Collective
Adelaide and Adelaide Uni's Environment Department. August Falls and
Josh & Dan from Academy are providing the tunes,
while the night also boasts puppetry by Adam Oehler, poetry and
cheap cocktails.
The
Sympathy Orchestra
are playing a rather special show at the Governor Hindmarsh on Sat 12
Oct, where they'll delve into the visual world by blending their music
with video and slide projections in a live environment, with Suite
opening proceedings.
Angelik's
track Fall Down On Me has just been selected to appear on the
national 'Grow Your Own' compilation - a track they'll no doubt play
at their Austral gig on Sat 12 Oct, along with Muscle Car.
Happy
birthday, The Seen! Adelaide's favourite ska sons (er, and
daughter) are holding their fifth birthday party at Bar 107 on Fri 18
Oct, along with The Satellites, immediately after they support Bomba
at the Gov on Thurs 17 Oct. Save Puff some cake, won't you?
Look,
beloved readers - spring is sprung, your town is full of The Rock,
there's not a single reason that you can possibly suggest that would
even remotely constitute an argument for you not to…
