Legends Of Motorsport

Beef With Cheese

High Beam/MGM

The Victorian rock'n'roll scene is diverse and happening, sporting the likes of the sterling Warped, Dern Rutlidge and Fez Perez. Yet Legends Of Motorsport are my personal favourites since they’re not afraid to play around with the safe rock n’ roll formula, mixing it with a cheesy vocal style and a shonky keyboard sound that seems if it’s taken straight out of a funky seventies blaxploitation film. Lest you think this sounds like a novelty band, this isn’t the case: they have a big driving heavy sound that can be silly, but they also groove in a serious and musically tantalising manner. ‘Beef With Cheese’ is the 'Sports second EP and shows much better production than their debut, although again, the fifteen minute playing time isn’t long enough.

There are some seriously heavy musical moments, with the almost Melvins like plod of Rx7, or the crunched out grooves of what is probably the best and most infectious track, Cream. The whole cheese factor is enhanced by the CD slick which is filled with pictures of cars, gross take-away food and Kt26 shoes, and the cover shot of the band dressed up in bogan tank tops. They might look silly, but Legends Of Motorsport are one of this country’s tastiest rock acts and ‘Beef With Cheese’ is a great example of their sound.
